most county and city agencies will pay more with a signing bonus(upwards of 20k). You might get a better shift with SP but who knows. If im not mistaken youll be working mostly traffic enforcement and accidents, not really responding to domestics and other stuff.

Most agencies work you like a rented mule and are just waiting for you to curse at someone for pulling at a gun at you on body cam just to write you up from what i hear.

PC- lib chiefs used to be rare and apparently are very common now.

Negative on the bold line above. Rotation shifts apply across the board up to and including Sergeant in patrol.

Edit to add: Some MSP barracks are “full service”, meaning they work with the local county jurisdiction and do indeed respond to the domestics and such. The two PG barracks are strictly highway. St Marys and Calvert are full service. I don’t remember if La Plata is or not.

are straight shifts a thing of the past? youre just switching days and nights every week?

I really sat down and looked into this career and gathered so much info from online and off duty guys but man most of the guys are burned the hell out.

No holidays, constant shift rotations with your body never getting adjusted, some agencies give no care if you work night and have court at 9am. Internal affairs writing you up for everything not to mention dealing with and seeing crazy shit.

Years ago, some agencies were looking into a rotation that worked with the body's Circadian Rhythm. I think it went something like days to midnights, to swing shift. I don't remember where it went. In the late seventies, I worked the shift rotation and there were mornings I would fall asleep in court. :o

I can't imagine too many 50 YOs old going through the physical requirements of a LEA training academy let alone working shift work. :sad20:

LOL I forget how much we paid Harvard for a sleep/circadian/work shift study, 3 million I think?
Oh yeah, they made a recommendation and that just didn't fit into our travel schedule. Or getting stuck out somewhere on your Friday, coming straight home on your Saturday, 1 day off and then back to work. They tried cascading a schedule where we would bet back NLT 1800 on our Fridays, but that never worked due to weather, mechanicals, changing mission, etc...

An individual that may have missed the age cutoff for hiring elsewhere, could do this solely for the lateral hire into the agency you were too old to sign on as a cadet with.

Why would someone hire on as a Trooper just to work a couple years to lateral into a smaller dept?

Because the Chevy Chase PD pays more for less work. :D
Not at all. And no one is a fan of working in a neighborhood town doing out of town home checks and minor complaints. Believe me, I've worked in a small town depts. Little town councils are terrible.

I was seriously considering it recently, but then saw they have a mandatory retirement at 60. That would only give me 4 years. And I’m thinking they aren’t gonna make a big investment of training and resources on someone that they’ll only get 4 years out of.

No. Lateral slide into a much larger dept whose cutoff is 39. Think higher level than state. Lateral hire is what they call it here, but it’s actually a step up for troopers………pay, retirement and insurance. It’s a path to get in if one just misses the 39 y.o. cutoff

I'm still confused. People leave small departments to go to the state. Retiring troopers leave the state to go to small departments.

Laplata is is a traffic barracks. troopers now are basically revenue generators.

And traffic law enforcers. Are they just supposed to sit on their ass and look at cars? Tell us, what would you like the MSP do that your own county agency doesn't provide?
Why do people think State Police are relegated to counties that have their own LE Agencies?

If it's that important to you, you can call them and request Troopers to respond to your house for emergency calls.
