Not at all. And no one is a fan of working in a neighborhood town doing out of town home checks and minor complaints. Believe me, I've worked in a small town depts. Little town councils are terrible.
I totally get why someone would not want too but i get why someone would want too. I got some ball busting from a county cop friend for applying to supreme court PD. I did it for benefits and starting pay plus 1 weekend a month! Anyways they aint easy to get into and i got beat out

La Plata runs the wife-beaters if they feel like it. In addition, there is MDTA police looking for something to make them relevant so they run traffic miles from the bridge.

In PG they have some deal where PGPD runs traffic on the state highways. Except they don't so it's all feral.
It's been a long time since they were "Toll Facilities Police". Maybe you don't know MDTA cops have statewide jurisdiction.

I know they do. But their job is the toll bridge. With video tolling and no more size/weight restrictions at the bridge, they have nothing left to do. So they venture out and run radar on 301 miles away from their primary area of responsibility. Either they are over-staffed or they are slacking at their critical homeland security mission of protecting the bridge against russian truck bomb attacks.

So more traffic enforcement is a bad thing. Got it.
I dunno, my training and experience is that you want to intercept the Russian truck bomb before it gets to the target.

You mean you don't want to work for Aberdeen PD and knock on doors to enforce infrastructure code compliance? Friend of mine got a visit from three of them a few months back because of overgrown bushes on a sidewalk.

Why would anyone want to be a darn copper?
Mouth bribes at traffic stops? (Looking at you, Frederick city police.....)

Hate dogs and want to shoot lots of them?

Abduct people while shitfaced in your cruiser? (MSP)

    Lots of fringe benefits.

That said, the few I know are all angling to get out of the job or get off the street.

I was seriously considering it recently, but then saw they have a mandatory retirement at 60. That would only give me 4 years. And I’m thinking they aren’t gonna make a big investment of training and resources on someone that they’ll only get 4 years out of.
    You would be surprised.

I just want to point out that in nicer times police were looked up to as heroes in their communities. If that were still the case and had ensuing pay increases in line with real inflation, then we would have people knocking down the doors of the academy and could pick from the best and brightest. Call me a boot-licker all you want, but at least I know my dog was always meant to just be a layer of security. I don’t need to worry about “revenue collectors” if I act reasonably. It isn’t too late start giving our children real life heroes again.

Quite true. Growing up, the officers in my neighborhood were always organizing events for the kids and would be the first ones to your house if someone had an emergency.

The trouble today is that the news media and liberal school systems continually twists the stories to make "heroes" out of criminals. It is hard to get the "real" message out to the people.

Additionally, left wing politicians are doing things like taking away the Policeman's Bill of Rights. This has dramatically affected police recruitment numbers. I just spoke to my neighbor yesterday ( a 25 year MSP Trooper) and he said the last class was only 11 people.

MSP are their own worst enemy imo. I generally support local LEO, but MSP has a serious issue of treating people as guilty until proven innocent. It’s a sentiment I’ve heard from plenty of various county officers as well, about the state guys

Retired county LE and sadly I do not want my son following in my footsteps. When I was a Detective I had the forethought to prepare myself for life after the badge paying for my own training to become certified in computer and cellphone forensics. Since retiring I’ve worked as a civilian with DHS, FBI and private companies. I highly recommend getting your kids interested in Cyber Security and Forensics. Nearly every college has certificate, 2 year or 4 year programs. I manage mostly young kids under 25 years of age that investigate network intrusions and ransomware incidents. If you have 3 years experience salaries are ranging from $140-$160K working remote from your house. Not a bad gig for a kid fresh out of college living with their parents. Hard for me to recommend a career in law enforcement now days. Marginal salaries, crap schedules, no public support and a split second decision that can be “Monday Morning Quarterbacked” for months can put you in jail or bankrupt you. Just isn’t worth it.

I second the Cyber Security field. My BIL heads up an Int'l firm that does this and he is busy worldwide. Some years ago he saw that Cyber Security was going to be needed and started a small company which keeps on getting bigger.

Depends on the Trooper. I've seen and heard of Deputies doing the same.

Oh... the irony of labeling an entire group based upon your opinion of that group labeling an entire group.

If more troopers would step in and help keep each other in line instead of staying silent as their partners cross lines unnecessarily, then it’d be a step in the right direction. Until then, if they aren’t part of their own solution then they are part of the problem.
