Howard police investigate Long Reach street robberies

The three incidents, which occurred in the area of the village center and Long Reach High School, report victims being assaulted and robbed by a group of seven to 10 men at about 11 p.m.

According to police, the two were encircled by a group of eight to 10 men, one of whom was on a BMX bicycle. One of the men punched one of the victims, leading the victims to flee and the men to pursue.

As they were fleeing, one of the men tripped, police said. The fallen man was punched and robbed of his wallet, police said.

Moral of the story: if you've lost your mind and find yourself walking around Long Reach after sundown, make sure you are wearing your very fastest running shoes. Its you vs. 8-10 guys plus a bicycle.

Nice to know. I think I would blind and / or severely hurt just one of those Mfers, rip out his larynx, maybe the others would flee like the dogs they are. Otherwise, at least 3 people are going to the hospital / (morgue). Me being one, likely.

I moved to Maryland in 1982 and moved to an apartment in Long Reach near the village center. Even then one didn't wander out at night from the apartment complex or walk the bike path which was nearby alone.

I worked with the HoCo police when I first moved to MD as a registered 4x4 driver for emergencies in inclement weather. I was never activated but the officer that interviewed me warned me about Long Reach. Wanted to know why anyone in their right mind would live in Long Reach. This was 1983.

My new wife, newly introduced to Maryland/Columbia from Delaware Water Gap PA, said it was beautiful in Columbia but scary on the bike paths. We got the H**L out of Long Reach as soon as we could make a down payment on a house.

I wouldn't set foot in that area now without a brass band and a police escort.

Howard County in General has become a joke. As for columbia, some parts are ok but I would not step foot in Oakland Mills area or Long Reach after dark.

Just wait until the next phase of columbia starts.

I grew up on Phelps Luck Drive and my parents still live there. That area has always been bad and has gotten worse. I will say that just a few blocks of that immediate area are still relatively safe but the trails are not after dark. High concentration of Sec 8 in the area along Tamar.

I lived in Oakland Mills (the other side of 175) for almost two years and was jumped by a group of about 15 teenagers against our group of five. We were walking back from a Jimmy Buffet concert at Merriweather, they approached us and tried to sell us weed. We declined, and then they punched about three of us including me with a cheap shot to the back of the head. We all took off running, but they ganged up on one of my friends who they proceeded to stomp the $h!t out of. He walked away but was pretty banged up. This was in 1999

Police arrest teens in Long Reach street robbery, burglaries
    Additional arrests expected
Howard County police have arrested four suspects, including three 15-year-old boys, in connection with a Long Reach street robbery and a series of residential burglaries in the same area.
Milton M. Montgomery, 18, of 8233 Tamar Meadow St., Columbia, was charged with two counts of robbery, two counts of second-degree assault, and one count of theft. The two 15 year olds, also from Columbia, were each charged with robbery, second-degree assault and theft. Their names are not being released due to their juvenile status.
On July 6, at 11:39 p.m. police were dispatched to a robbery in progress in the 6100 block of Old Dobbin Lane. Two victims told police they were walking across the parking lot on the side of the school when they were encircled by a group of seven to nine males. One of the suspects punched one of the victims, resulting in both victims running to flee the area. Both victims were chased by the suspects onto a ball field, where one victim fell and was punched. One of the suspects reached into the victim’s pocket and stole his wallet, which contained foreign currency, credit cards and a student identification card. The victims ran off and the suspects ran in another direction into a wooded area.
Through investigation, police also learned that the victim’s stolen credit card was used at a nearby gas station the day after the robbery. Surveillance video showed a group of five young males who fit the description of the group of males from the July 6 robbery. Through investigation, police identified the suspects and they were arrested over the weekend. Montgomery is being held in the Howard County Detention Center on $40,000 bond. The three juveniles were released to their guardians.
In addition, Montgomery and one of the 15-year-old boys arrested in the Old Dobbin Lane street robbery, along with another 15-year-old boy, also from Columbia, were charged with multiple burglaries in the Long Reach area. The burglaries, which took place on Airybrink Lane, Tamebird Court, Cobblefield Drive and Cloudleap Court, occurred mostly overnight where the suspects gained entry through rear sliding glass doors and targeted electronics and cash.
Additional arrests and charges in relation to other robberies and burglaries in Long Reach and the Columbia Lakefront area are expected.

Seems like a plain clothes decoy armed to the teeth could be used in that location. One or two encounters with a law enforcement person(s) carrying his/her duty weapon would be a wakeup call for the thugs.

That's good. The problem is they got 3 out of 10 or so and only one of those is off the streets. I'd be curious to know if they're in a gang...or maybe we don't have gangs in HoCo, just restless youths who are victimized by the high unemployment rate.

Maryland and Howard County Courts are too soft on Juveniles and violent crime. Why release the juveniles to their guardians? They (the guardians) are the ones who let them out at night to begin with. Lack of responsible adult supervision is a root cause here in my biased opinion. I have always known exactly where my kids are day or night. If I can't know they don't go.

Dam thugs. They are just about every where! "Yo" is what they call each other. With their effin pants hanging down pass their a55. If they are not in your neighborhood then you are blessed. I live in Baltimore city BKA "the hood" I call it "Death Valley". Actually where I live is a beautiful area. Nice trees, flowers and grass on all the lawns, some good neighbors but some are "YO"S". It's not legal but you gotta have some protection when going out at night.
