Yes, I was asking what the trouble with one is...

It's a Mosin Nagant. If I had to pick only 10 rifles to have in my collection, why would I pick one that has several tens of millions of brothers? It's like choosing a Honda Civic as your dream car over a Bugatti Veyron.

I prefer more exotic items for my collection... check out my list. The Mosin Nagant is a rifle that for its price, delivers good performance for its buyers. I have owned a 91/30 Ex-PU and 2 M44s, sold them both. They were ugly, had sticky bolts (I know this can be corrected but I didn't want to mess with it) and generally were just too common for my tastes.

I guess I've always had a knack for being "different". Things that are vastly popular turn me off.

    Kentucky long rifle (Revolutionary War)
    German Mauser
    SMLE
    1903-A3
    M1 Garand
    M1 Carbine
    M1921 and variants Thompson
    M14
    M-16 and variants
    AK 47
SKS models. that's eleven...I'll drop the SKS if I have to

and.... Combat Shotgun (okay, its not a rifle) honorable mention

Well since civillian ownership of a Class 3 M249 or M240 will never happen, and that an M249 in semi-auto is $12,000, I'm not surprised. ;)

There are actually 6 M249's that are transferable to civilians. I know this cause I fired one on my 21st birthday in Las Vegas at The Gun Store which was pretty sweet with the reflex scope on it. Was even sweeter when the range officer let me dump the rest of the belt.

The list to me would be and in no particular order:

FAL- right hand of the free world and made in different variations depending on what country one was in, first battle rifle of NATO

AK-same thing as the FAL but for the other side and made in way more variations plus uber-reliable

AR- the first 22 caliber assault rifle and plastic black gun. Plus it is our current military go-to rifle.

M1 Garand- rifle that won us WWII, the hallmark of the greatest generation, and only semi-auto during WWII to be issued as standard issue

Mauser- a rifle that was so revolutionary in its conception that its action was not only copied by us with the Springfield '03 but the design itself has set the standard in other rifles that are still used today for sniping, competition, and hunting

Remington 700- the quintessential general purpose bolt-gun that can be used for anything

Vz-58- a gun that was designed in defiance of the rest of the Warsaw Pact and a big F U to the Soviets that they were going to go their own way which is to me is pretty sweet that they were able to get away with it. It carried on design elements of the StG-44, is simple to use and more ergonomic than the AK. Also an underdog and unique weapon system since pretty much wherever the AK went the Vz went too but was overshadowed

Lee-Enfield- one of the fastest bolt actions ever and the rifle of the British Empire, so well-made, durable, and accurate that they are still encountered in Iraq and Afghanistan

Steyr AUG- first successful bullpup rifle to be built in large numbers and introduced an alternative way to the classic design by having the trigger in front of the magazine that also allowed a long barrel to be used in a compact CQB-like manner

any Swiss rifle- got to hand it to a country that has remained neutral since 1815 to create accurate, reliable, and handy rifles to stand the test of time as well as to use them to stay neutral

I know there are classics out there that deserve a place on the list before these...but I offer you the modern video game, TV, movie junky collector rifle list (Minus NFA)...with associated quotes/reasons of course. Think college kid gamer hits the lotto and decides to start flexing his Second Amendment muscles...

    1- Barrett M107/M82A1
Because it is the biggest, baddest boomstick in every single game...
    2- Knights Armament MK11 MOD0
Because I took out that fat guy with it in Navy SEALs SOCOM II with one...
    3- Colt LE6920 (M4)
Because I want to put every conceivable accessory on it and pretend I'm Special Forces...
    4- Springfield Armory M1 Garand
Because its the best gun in every WWII game made...
    5- AK-47
Because Robert used one in Red Dawn...
    6- H&K PSG-1
Because my first airsoft gun was a PSG-1 and its tough to beat the cool factor of a PSG-1...
    7- SIG SG552 Commando
Okay...one NFA item...Because this is the greatest assault rifle ever made...
    8- FN SCAR Heavy
Because I can take down helicopters with it in Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter II...
    9- HK 416
Because they said it was cool on TV...and its your first gun in Battlefield: Bad Company...
    10- Colt R6550 (M16A2)
Because I love them and they were good enough for Blackhawk Down...

    nice....

    Here's mine:

    AR15 (Any variety)
    AK47 (Any variety)
    Mauser 8mm (98K, 24/47, or M48)
Mosin Nagant 91/30 (round or hex)
    .22lr Bolt Action (any variety)
    Ruger 10/22
    M1 Garand
    1903 Springfield
    Enfield Mk IV No. 1
    SKS (Any variety)

That list looks good to me. I'm a .22LR fan so I would replace AK47 with .22LR pump. I suggest stepping up to a Russian SKS instead of the cheaper alternatives, with 1956 Sino-Soviet as a close second to Russian.

If you wanted exotic, take the brass framed Henry off and try to find an iron framed Henry.

    270

That is all I have and need... believe the basics are covered with these three... wish the 270 was a more "standard" round, but I have no place to shoot a gun like that so I'm happy with it. Have tons of ammo for it though, just in case. Scope on it is old, I could buy something much better, but I'd still have no place to shoot it for fun.

I wrote this up based on frequency I shoot them.
Since it said (Collector Shooters, I did not include rifles I only shoot for hunting)

I put the AK last because I can only shoot one when a friend shows up with one since I don't own one. I'm not sure it would be higher on the list though if I owned one. Then again, if it was not for the SB281, I would replace the AK with an M1A

I did not include any shotguns. That can be covered in the Mossburg vs. Rem 870 thread.

Its always good to resurrect a necro-thread before the holidays so people can figure out what hole to fill in their collection :)

    1) AR15
    2) M1 Garand
    3) 1903a3
    4) M1 Carbine
    5) Ruger 10/22
    6) Winchester 94 in 30/30
    7) Mosin 91/30
    8) Mauser K98K
    9) SKS
    10) AK47
