    Dundalk, Hon!
Welcome! What part of the state are you in? My father grew up in Fall River. We were a Navy family and Quonset Point, RI was his last duty station. We lived in Somerset for 6 years (~40 years ago) and people tell me I still have a faint trace of the accent in some words. And I still say "wicked". Go Sox!

Some things you don't like about MA are worse here, a few are better. I have to say, if at all possible, you should try to settle in Northern Virginia ("NoVa"). You establish residence, fill out a form, meet the (easy) requirements, write a check, et voila!, you have a "shall issue" concealed carry permit and the envy of all us serfs on the wrong side of the Potomac. Resident Concealed Handgun Permits

Wherever you settle, stay involved, stay safe and have fun.

Welcome to the Montgomery Compound of the People's Socialist Republik of Marylandistahn. Make sure you bring your wallet.

Only site that I know that wont ship to me in MoCo is Palmetto State Armory. Even if the law is moot, they do not want that 1% chance of having to go to court because of it. If I may suggest, move to No.Va. This whole beltway area is a pain in the butt when it comes to traffic. If I could do it all over again, I would move to No.VA.

PWM, some of the natives think that Maryland's laws are the worst and that we are oppressed by the state. These are the same folks who never had to wait six months and get interviewed by a judge before they could buy a handgun.

There are some really stupid laws here, but overall it is not painful. If you wish, you can buy NFA toys with relative ease.

Northern VA and parts of WV do have merit. Look at those locations as well.

If you do move to MD, please get active and start writing letters to the politicians so they know another pro gun vote is here.

Any pointers/tips would be greatly appreciated! Looking forward to shorter/less obnoxious winters! Thanks!

    - When coming down, go through PA and buy all the 30rnd mags you want.
    - Buy man silhouette targets (I know they are illegal there)
    - Buy any magazine you want, but don't transfer it to anyone in MD, b/c that is illegal.
    - Don't vote for MD democrats, they don't like anything to do with guns.
    - winters? are you an idiot? There are no winters because of man made climate change. (just kidding it may snow a few times). Maryland is at the special line between bad winters and the south. so it just depends.
    - Don't move around the gang members in moco, they steel guns. Criminals in maryland go to the Maryland state police, find out who has registered weapons and just steel them.

find someone with a farm or a range you like.

How much $ do you have? If you make a lot of $ you can just buy a piece of land in Frederick county and shoot on it.

Welcome. Other than actual carrying , you will find Md an improvement .
But to echo a theme here unless a relative is giving you a free lease on really nice house, just keep going another 5 mi and cross the river. Even if you wanted on purpose to live close to DC, in one of the two most expensive jurisdictions in the country, the other top 2 expensive/ prestigious jurisdiction is just over the C.J. Bridge, in a free Commonwealth . 100,000 people commute back & forth in about equal porportions each way.

Welcome to the Republic of MD!! And while the below statement might sound like a joke, they're actually words to live by in the winter...... :D
It is not the weather you will dislike, it will be the MD ammateur snow drivers which will drive you mad. Down here two inches makes people panic, drive to the store and buy all the toilet paper, milk and survival kits in the stores and they get to the store dangerously.

Hello, new member here. Will be moving into MD from MA next August, and from what I read here it seems I am moving from one anti-gun state to another.

Where in/around Montgomery county should/can I shoot large handgun and rifle. Any 24 hour ranges?

Any pointers/tips would be greatly appreciated! Looking forward to shorter/less obnoxious winters! Thanks!

Welcome to MD I think. I live in Montgomery County and there are several ranges non 24 hour you can shoot at:

Izaac Walton League. There are several chapters in MoCo. I am a member of the Rockville Chapter. They have an 8 lane pistol range Not fancy but really nice folks there. There are chapters in Poolesville and Damascus as well. Go to the Izaac Walton web site to get chapter info.

Gilbert Indoor Range in Rockville. Nice facility but expensive IMHO. You have to pay for a yearly membership to shoot there and you have to buy your ammo from them. Electric target system as well. I decided not to join.

My favorite is the NRA Range in the basement of NRA HQ's building in Fairfax, VA. I like shooting in VA as they have sane gun laws. Not the nonsensical nitwittery (is that a word?) laws that MD has. In MD after you leave a range you must go straight to your home as I interpret the law (Novus?). In VA you can open carry a sidearm on your person or car and a non resident CCW permit is easy to obtain. I like going out to eat or socialize after I shoot. In MD you can't legally do that. Screw MD. I will give my dining business money to VA until they come to their senses in MD. (Never most likely)The NRA HQ's range is off Rt 50 near RT 66. Beautiful facility. 15 lanes with electric target system. You can shoot anything up to and including 454 Casull. Shotguuns are sliugs only. You can buy ammo and targets from them or bring your own. It gets busy on weekends but I've never waited more than 30 minutes to shoot. It's 10 bucks to join and you have to pass a simple written safety test. NRA members pay 14.00 an hour and non members 18 an hour.Guests are 8 and 12 dollars an hour respectively I think. Go to the NRA web page for info.

Welcome to MD. As others have stated, join MSI to try to get these morons in Annapolis to think with logic and reason instead of hysteria. Not likely but we need to try.

Welcome to Maryland. If you can, live in a neighboring state. Our state government is going down the drain. All neighboring states have "shall issue" ccw permits but Maryland (and of course DC) doesn't.

    Welcome!

The gun laws here are almost as bad as the ones in Massachusetts , and the inshore fishing here (particularly for stripers) is almost (if not every bit) as good . I compared notes late last month with my wife’s cousin in Haverhill late last month. Cousin Dave is a fellow gunny and inshore fisherman.

If traffic is a major concern of yours, I would can NoVa. I would move to as close to your place of work as I could, but, seriously, I would avoid Montgomery County, the pols there are the worst of the worst.

Cresap is a pretty good range, but its only 100 yards. Long range shooting is kind of difficult to do, but there are several ranges that can accommodate you. There are numerous indoor pistol ranges in the area.

You can legally purchase large mags in PA; you just can’t transfer them in MD. It is easier to purchase firearms in MD than Massachusetts, as we have no registration schemes and handgun permit scheme (yet), only the 7 day waiting period which is bad enough. A concealed carry permit is virtually impossible to get in MD, you pretty much have to be well connected.

Wow, I never expected this many responses!

So, I looked into No. VA.... unfortunately my better half will require being close to Rockville for her families business. I work for our uncle Sam, and can honestly be anywhere near D.C, or VA (I am actually being relocated to a facility near Carderock(sp?) next year. So it looks like my plans of making the cash deposits for the business will have to hold up ;)

In regards to obtaining new items, I can always move to NH a month before I move (which was my initial plan, however it seems that MD does not have the same problems MA has in terms of what you can/can't buy).

Obviously, I will join and support any pro 2A group in the area as I have done here in MA. Someone has to make sense of this for our lawmakers, if not us then who?

Thanks again for the warm welcome and crash course in MD laws/regs!

I live a mile from Carderock. I don't want to be nosy, are you being assigned to the Naval Ship Research center? The Rockville Izaac Walton league in Rockville may be your closest range other than Gilbert's. As I stated earlier, the NRA range in Fairfax is excellent. I'd be happy to take you either for you to check out. PM me if you are interested.

    Yeah, Naval surface warfare.

I appreciate the offer, although I won't be there until next August. I hope your offer still stands.

    Thanks!
