I am putting money away to get my first AR and have a question about the HBAR law. What exactly makes the MD definition of an HBAR? also, if I buy an assembled lower half and a government profile upper half and put them together, is that illegal?

A govt. profile will not be legal.

The barrel MUST be SOLD as or DESCRIBED as HBAR/HEAVY BARREL.

And good luck finding ANY HBAR descriptions/laws. We've looked, begged, and pleaded for 3 three years. NADA!!!

    PS: Howdy and Welcome.

Try Stag Arms for a 20" HBAR if WW doesn't have it.

Also gov't profile would be illegal in the state of MD. But, only in the state of MD.

A 20 inch HBAR will weigh 3 tons. 3 tons and 4 ounces if you put 45 degree sights on it.

A 16 inch would be a better choice. Still heavy, but usable.

MSP sent a letter out a good way back stating at least .750" minimum OD profile. Colt was being sold in state with thise barrels. Now if that has been superceded with the label/stsmp mandate...

While we're re-discussing this, does the official word of marked HBAR apply to all calibers or just 5.56?

For HBAR uppers check out Windham Weponrys 16" HBC (heavy barrel carbine). Or look at the Rock River Arms website. They have several uppers advertised has HBAR. A2 20" Govt model too.
