if it for sure aint asbestos, what a great score! but....

do you have a manufacturing date?

some of the asbestos lined filing cabinets feature asbestos in a poured concrete matrix, so it doesn't look like the typical fibrous asbestos you often (used to) see in fireplace tiles etc. But they are still potentially hazardous enough I'd avoid them

I had a good friend who was paranoid about losing his files to fire, so he had asbestos lined filing cabinets in his office/lab. He died of mesothelioma.

fire is quicker, and more merciful. take care, amigo!

No on the date. I was concerned about that as well. I just had some asbestos covered pipes removed for our remodel. I had a fair amount of training in asbestos IDing when I worked for Johnson Controls. We could get fired for going into a boiler/mechanical room with a known asbestos hazard.

I found a study done by the USN on fire retardant file cabinets. They were under mandate to remove anything with asbestos in it. Of the manufacturers that they tested (including the maker of these) only one used asbestos in their filing cabinets. That made me feel a little better. I'll still send off a sample to make sure.

I agree with you, asbestos should not be taken lightly. Thanks for the heads up.

It's pretty amazing what all this stuff was used in. Most of it's safe it dosen't get converted into dust, but I would just as soon have it out of my space.

Asbestos in a cementaceous matrix isn't going to jump into your lungs any more than a gun resting on a table is going to spontaneously go off. The guys with the meso routinely testify about applying asbestos in pipe insulation, and having it fall from overhead like snow. Mechanics used to blow brake dust out with air hoses. Any friable material that is breaking up, or the dust created by grinding or cutting asbestos-bearing material is to be avoided.

A nice tidbit of info to help you out:

If you open the door first, you won't "have to go THROUGH the door", jus' through the doorway.:lol2:

Oh heck, I can't open that door. It's not my house.

These are the steps they need to come down, but don't tell anybody. They'll find out when they get here.:innocent0

Wish I was closer I could have moved that by myself. Moving heavy stuff is part of what I do full time. 400 LBS is nothing to take down 3 steps.

Let me know if you run into any problems I may be able to make the ride up after work with the proper tools.

Don't be so hard on yourself , the proper diet can fix that. :D

Ah, you have steps like my old house , when I let two 14 year old boys control the top of the cart while I was under a 28 gun stack on safe.. Fun fun..

I think rather than offering ammo, the guys would work for grilled items and a after work beer..

So a deamon possessed person is kept in your basement that makes beds levitate, stabs crucifixes in their own nether regions, spin their heads 360 degrees, has a severe case of chapped lips, and puck pee green soup everywhere. Now that explains why I heard Mike Oldfield's song Tubular Bells playing when I went by your house last Saturday night.

It's not often that I hear a fat joke I haven't already thought of. :lol2:

To explain I work for a Specialized Crane and Rigging Company located in DC. I am a CCO certified crane operator for hydraulic truck cranes (unlimited tonnage) and hold a DC Class 7 Operating Engineer License. I also hold a class A CDL and several certs for overhead rigging.

Safecracker was really surprised when I showed up with a 30 ton crane to take my double door Mosler safe home a few months ago.

    yes to that!

It is white, but it looks like some type of poured in place fireproofing. It's not fibrous like any asbestos I've ever delt with.

Who made it? I'll tell you if it has asbestos. (But I don't think it does.)

I have a Remington-Rand that I am now concerned about.

    Many Remington Rands contained asbestos.

Email me a picture of it with a close up (macro) of the dial and any ID or safe rating plates or decals that might be on it, and I check for you.

X2. Non issue unless your grinding it into dust. Asbestos floor tiles are in all sorts of old homes and a fine UNTIL you go and chip them up to get them out.

Thanks guys. I couldn't have done it without you. I hope all of the bones heal fast.

Sorry about the misunderstanding with the ammo. I could have sworn I mentioned it had been fired.

    I never got an address...

Darn! I though I pmed everybody! Sorry, I was looking forward to seeing you.
