Just... wow. Dude says he isn't prepared to define "assault weapon" because he isn't an expert on guns

Maybe he REALLY understands the alcohol and tobacco part of the job to make up for it?

**** Yup this. I mean hey, Whoopi said “Dr. Jill Biden” would make a great Surgeon General…

Political appointees don’t necessarily have to have expertise in the subject matter of the department they head - there’s staff for that.

We could potentially have a defense secretary that has never been in the military and is a pacifist, or a transportation secretary who has no license to drive and rides a bike everywhere, or a Secretary of State that hates traveling and has never been out of the country, or a secretary of the interior who is an outdoorsmen, and hates the indoors!

We already have a Supreme Court justice who is a woman, who can’t define what a woman is… There’s staff for all those minor inconsequential details…

All true; this guy is certainly not unique in that regard. Most Cabinet Secretaries were chosen for political loyalty, not expertise on the laws, regulations, or processes that are enforced or implemented by the departments that they run.

That being said, it's still perfectly legitimate to be worried about a Cabinet Secretary who openly admits their ignorance in public, the way that Dettelbach did. Over the years, I've been to many speaking events in DC featuring Secretaries (or Under-Secretaries, or Assistant Secretaries), and I usually associate folks who cannot answer basic questions from the audience like "how do you define an assault weapon" with incompetence. If someone is too intellectually lazy to even try to answer a question like that, it's usually a sign that they're intellectually lazy in other aspects of their job (and life).

There is a school of thought that the most important factor of being the ( Head of Whatever ) is Management Skills .

Visualize the opposite: A super geeky technical expert , that can't set budgets, allocate resources, and handle the logistics and support infrastructure, will quickly crash & burn .

In an organization of more than single digit people , the head person at top actually does little or nothing of ( the inherent purpose of the Organization ) . They do the administration, public relations, and politicing.

Ideally the Head should have a basic concept of what's going , to be able to set priorities of the minions, and be able to give a non commit al public comment without obviously putting Foot in Mouth.

However, this particular question has come up before. It’s obviously designed to box someone in. It’s not hard for them to come up with an answer that avoids the box and scores feel good points for the responder.
