Group Claims Armed Citizens Have Killed More Americans than All Wars Combined

    http://www.breitbart.com/big-govern...armed-citizens-killed-americans-wars-combined
On September 21 Americans for Responsible Solutions–the gun control group founded by Gabby Giffords and Mark Kelly–tweeted numbers from the Center for American Progress Action Fund (CAP) claiming armed citizens in America have killed more people since 1989 than all wars since 1776 combined.

The tweet contains a meme which says, “The number of deaths from gun violence just since Reagan’s presidency is higher than the number of soldiers killed in combat in all of U.S. history.”

    http://www.coloradostatesman.com/co...ivil-war-resulted-twice-deaths-terrorists-911

September 17, 1862 was the bloodiest single day in U. S. history

Civil War historian James M. McPherson places these statistics into gruesome and sobering context by pointing out that the number killed or mortally wounded that day at Antietam is approximately twice the number of total deaths from the terrorist attacks of 9/11/2001; total casualties that day were nearly four times the total of U.S. casualties on D-Day (the June 6, 1944 invasion at Normandy). Viewed in a contemporary context, casualties that single day at Antietam exceeded the combined American losses in all other 19th century wars involving the U.S. (i.e., the War of 1812, the Mexican-American War, the Spanish-American War, and all the Indian Wars). (Source: Crossroads of Freedom: Antietam, by James M. McPherson (2002, Oxford University Press).

Way to stretch things. "Armed Citizens" implies licensed individuals are doing this. In fact, most are gangbangers and suicides.

What can you say? That group will lie about anything to get their names back in the news. They need to be held accountable.

Technically, their numbers are correct when talking about death by firearms, i.e. combat related deaths. During the Civil War, approx 215,000 soldiers were killed in combat while an additional 400,000-500,000 died from accidents, starvation and disease.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_military_casualties_of_war

The vast majority of native American deaths were due to disease brought by white settlers. Probably far less than 100,000 (accurate numbers are elusive) were killed by whites with firearms.

so... did the civil war count as armed citizens for their statistics?

and it says armed citizens IN America, not armed American citizens

No doubt in their death by firearms numbers they include suicides because if guns didn't exist these people would not jump off a bridge, or overdose themselves, drive a car head on into a big rig, stand on a railroad track, leave the engine running with the garage door shut, or off themselves in a thousand other ways. It was the guns fault.

Also be sure to include people shot in self defense because it would be much better if the victim died rather than the bad guy get SHOT!
