Tragic, but this statement had me with WTF:

"Family friend Stephanie Wells also told NBC News that the family's power had been shut off because of an unpaid bill. "I just feel that the system failed him," Wells said. "They didn't reach out to help him with his utility bills."

That one hit me too. Nobody deserved to die over an electricity bill, but the expectation that there is a "system" that is somehow at fault here ... just makes my brain want to implode.

    Yikes!
Princess Anne Police Chief Scott Keller told the AP there was a generator in the kitchen that was out of gasoline.

the guy has seven kids with no ability to care for them - let the system take care of them

making babies seems to be - too easy

Exactly....he should have had his weed whacked many kids ago.......

But so long as voters keep electing folks that do not have the gonads to shut down the gravy train it doesn't matter....

His ex-wife was supposed to pay child support, but she doesn't seem to have the best decisionmaking skills either, so I doubt she did her share. The guy was working in food service, in all likelihood, 'the system' already provided health insurance for the kids and food stamps for the family.
In some places like NYC the utility cant cut the power during the winter months, has the side effect that by april the accounts are huge.

I recall seeing some stories over the years that some folks put the genny inside to guard against theft. I have a corner lot and fear my genny may get swiped, but I use a stout chain to try and hang on to it. I know, locks only help keep honest people honest...

Interesting, on the noon news they just reported that no one in the family had been seen for a week. The school system came by to look for the kids twice. Why did it take a week for anyone to think, lets call the Sheriff's dept to do a welfare check? Not that it would of made a difference in this case, but still.

Radio this morning said they were on spring break, but don't know if that was verified.

With a running generator in the house, it wouldn't have taken too long to do them in.

I have investigated workplace CO issues and remember 2 grown men becoming ill from a pressure washer in a parking structure. Think about how much better ventilation is there than in a small 1 story house.

interesting....I now have 2 monitors because the one would sound off if I choked the wood furnace down too much. (end of year and I know chimney needs cleaning bad) Both pos Kiddes, one just audible the other led display and sound. The led never showed any indication....so yesterday I put it at the trucks exhaust.... it got up to 300 with great effort but still no audible alarm. I no doubt trashed the receipt so I'll buy another then bring that one back. Maybe just got a bad one?

CO alarms are generally only good for 5-7 years.
I'm not sure that an alarm is louder than a generator running indoors.

I feel bad for the kids.

Delmarva Power says in October 2014, power to the home was disconnected, at the request of the customer. On March 25th, 2015, Delmarva Power says a smart meter revealed that there was a stolen electric meter being used at the home. They then apparently disconnected the illegally connected unit, as is protocol. The home was not disconnected because of non-payment, according to Delmarva Power.

as it turns out, the rental home never had legal power to begin with while the Todd family was there, the utility said. Electric service had been disconnected in October, and there was no request to reconnect it after the family moved there in November.

“Through the use of smart meter technology, Delmarva Power discovered a stolen electric meter was being used at the home on March 25, 2015. Delmarva Power disconnected the illegally connected meter for safety reasons and to comply with standard protocol. Delmarva Power did not disconnect electric service at this address for nonpayment,” the statement said.

So the guy has been stealing power since he started living in the house in November and people are trying to make Delmarva Power look like they are the one's who killed the kids. :sad20:

One problem with rental homes is often that the utility won't connect power if the prior tenant still had an outstanding bill. This is done to avoid people gaming the system by not paying electric and then re-connecting under a different occupants name after it gets shut off. So with low-rent homes (trailers, modular), the tenants often have a hard time to get electrical service started in the first place. You have to go down to the power company office, swear and affidavit that you didn't live there, show proof of your prior residence etc.

Doesn't excuse what he did, just for context. There are lots of poor people who work within the system to feed their family. This couple got divorced last year, and that was a pro-se divorce on the second try (iow there was no money on either side). Mom doesn't strike me as the sharpest knife in the drawer, her earliest record on case search is a paternity case where the dad for kiddo #1 had an address of 'correctional center'.

Del Mar Va does reconnect power in a different name . Neighbors have been doing this for years . I called Del Mar Va and told them that once you cut the power they just use a different name they told me they are looking into it (that was a year ago) they are still doing it though

The family bears the brunt of this tragedy as they should of helped him out

Not sure the family had any opportunity to know. When he moved into the house, he apparently never connected power but just plugged in his stolen meter. It was just a week ago that delmarva figured out he was stealing power and disconnected him.

Where his family could have come in was 10 years ago when his dad should have taken him aside and told him to get himself fixed rather than popping out kids that he couldn't afford.
