Well, I finally got started on the Colonial this week. Had a lot of fun assembling it. The barrel tang/bolster took more inletting than I expected after watching Jim Kibler's videos, but good practice. The Chambers lock is incredible and required very little inletting to install. A nice seemless fit with the barrel and flash hole too.

Anyway, the rifle is all assembled and is ready for disassembly and finish work (filing, polishing, sanding, etc.). Now to choose the finish. I may keep the barrel and lock in the white, but not sure yet.

For those of you contemplating these kits, they seem well worth it to me and high quality. I'd say I spent a little over 3 half-days on the assembly. It's my first one, so will go faster next time. Definitely a lot of fun.

A set of pics attached. Next update when I am into the finishing.

Very cool! Mine is still in the crate. I just haven’t felt up to even getting my work area setup. I think I have all the tools and supplies that I need.

Finished. Kept the cherry stock natural with just several coats of true oil applied. Blued barrel and lock, lightly aged the brass. Going to make a new ramrod from a cherry dowell and brass ends to better match the stock. Other than that, time to take her out to shoot. :party29:

Nice job, it's always fun to finish one of these. Your kit looks perfect, and the wood will darken with age providing a classic appearance. This will be a family heirloom.

Very well done! I am curious about how the patchbox works (opens, closes). Could you explain or take time to show more pics?

Patchbox slides open. Press on the bottom (blued) button that holds it closed and it slides open.

Thanks for that, looks like it must slide to the rear to open, but it could I guess go forward. Sorry only familiar with hinged patchboxes, T/C Hawken etc.

Looks to only slide to the rear, if I'm interpreting the movement of it from the grooves in the stock, from this picture below.
