I believe the Kent County population is within a few hundred of the original 1790 census. History and tradition.

Great analysis, thanks a lot @308Scout. This is great analytical information for W&C permit instructors, as well as those that are socially and politically engaging on 2A issues. In most "free" states I think around 6-10% of the population have CCW/W&C permits.

What would be interesting is to see it weighted by removing those under 21 Yo. Aka what % of over 21 have their HGP.

Yes, under 21 can get permits. They always have been able. Pre-Bruen they had to have a letter from an employer explaining why they needed it. I have not heard the post-Bruen policy.

Take it a step further, and subtract the Obvious Prohibited Persons . No , you can't get a firm number of total Prohibited. But Number of Adult System persons Imcarcerated , or under Parole or Probation exists , and if not Public, should be easily obtained. Heck " Criminal Justice Reform " minded politicians regularly spout such numbers and percentages, if you asked , I'm sure they would talk your ear off , for as long as you could keep a straight face .

Numbers exist for Active Weed Card Holders .

    **************************

While the above drilling down is interesting for intellectual curiosity. But the long established Metrics of comparison between Jurisdictions, and same Jurisdictions over time , has always been total number of Permits , divided by overall population. Since the proliferation of Permitless Carry in majority of the country , the numbers have both become unquantifable, and actually changed .

But still , the numbers from the Heydays of the Shall Issue Era are the best numbers we have , or are likely to ever have .

And Maryland isn't doing bad . 2.9% would have been average- ish for Shall Issue states , 20- ish years ago .

I am very happy to have been proven wrong in my initial estimate in how quickly we reached current numbers . But the statistics and anecdotal observations do show a leveling off of New Permits, and my Today's Prediction is for a plateau around 3.5% .

    ******************

Further meanwhile ; for an oversimplified rule of thumb guesstimate of Permits/ Eligible Population , using nationwide percentages .

    22% Under 18
    19% Over 65

Yeah , there's plenty of Old Farts packing heat , but that's balanced by 18- 20 year Olds in Jurisdictions that generally don't allow Conceal Carry for under 21 .

    8 % Convicted Felons

Roughly 50 % removed from the Pool . Unknowable numbers for 18-64 non Felon alcoholics, Additics, and seriously crazy, but 50 % of total population will put the right ballpark .

Gender and ethnicity factors get quickly into the weeds .

Females and Minorities have recently been the fastest growing categories for oercent increase of both Ownership and Carry . And those are good things à Everbody has the same rights , and numbers will continue to work towards the Overall Population means . But 2022 numbers still have Female Permit Holders at 29% of overall Permit Holders , so still significant skewing Male .

That's the point. What percentage of adults have a permit?
There are 4,775,396 adults, (949,890 of whom are seniors) in Maryland.*
With about 166,500 permit holders, it works out to be almost 3.5%

I'm not aware of how many valid permit holders have committed gun crimes, but I haven't heard any buzz about it, so I assume it's a verylow number.

It goes without saying that the GA is NOT interested in public safety; rather, their focus is on disarming the law-abiding. I have seen NOTHING contrary to that viewpoint.
