Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of S&W 1911's. The fish scale serrations are a very practical and effective surface for racking the slide but, they're a major departure from traditional. That said, I've come very close to buying an E Series that's gotten the S&W Performance Center treatment. I'm sure they would grow on me eventually!

I can't recommend this E series enough. I looked at the performance series one but the price tag was a bit to much for me, and I don't like compensated barrels. As accurate as this one is plus how crisp trigger is I'm not sure what more they could do.

How about this? This was on my 50th birthday - Dan Wesson Silverback, Blanton's Bourbon, and a new table saw. (The one in the pic is a Ridgid, but I took it back and got a Metabo/Hitachi)

I think the Silverback was one of the best-looking 1911's DW ever built.

Considering it had been almost 30 years since the last time I shot a Detonics Combat Master 45, I wasn't sure what to expect. The last one I owned was always 100% reliable with FMJ range ammo and certain brands of JHP but, these things had a somewhat deserved reputation for being a little hinky so I kept an open mind while driving to the range yesterday afternoon. The main thing I wanted to see was if it performed anywhere near as well as my original Combat Master did and if I could hit anything with it.

One thing I always appreciated about these little guns was how easy they were to field-strip. The Detonics Combat Master doesn't require either special tools, advanced knowledge of firearms or colorful language to take apart and reassemble for routine maintenance. I gave it a good cleaning and lubing with FP-10 before heading to the range because, in spite of its unique design, it's still a 1911 that works best when lubed correctly in the right places. It had also never been fired and was bone dry inside.

I wasn't expecting a stroll down memory lane but, that's about how it went yesterday: no malfunctions until round #43, the last shot in one of the MecGar magazines. It was an FTF but, I'm not 100% sure if it was the magazine's fault or if I just wasn't gripping tightly enough during the previous shot. The original Detonics magazines worked without any issues. Overall, it ran pretty much as I hoped it would: clearing the 10 yard 4" steel plate rack wasn't difficult after getting a feel for the sights. Recoil was very controllable. It was fun to shoot one-handed. I wish every first range trip went this well!

    Not exactly porn...yet

Photo isn't near dead sexy enough to be labeled as porn--- maybe soft-core at this point. Added my first 1911 to the collection today-- she looked awfully lonely just sitting in the showcase. Couldn't just leave her there for some ne'er do well to take advantage of her. So I'll call it a rescue mission of mercy. Now-- I wait for the crown to declare me "Not Disapproved".
