    LOL...revealing our ages, perhap?

That's what my wife says when I tell her I have a “hankerin’” for something

LOL I'm sure the whippersnappers are going, huh? What's a Caspian? Detonics??? They have no memory of back in the day when the only company making 1911's was Colt and it was the work of people like Cal Foster (Caspian) and Pat Yates (Detonics) in home machine shops during the 1960's that blazed the trail for future generations of 1911-builders.

Randall also made a reversed 1911 for southpaws. They reversed the design completely to do it. Don't know how many were sold but it can't be too many.

    Randall Left-Hand 1911:
    636 full size,
108 compact size (Curtis LeMay edition)
    4 LH/RH full-size matched sets
    = 748
plus a few conversion and multi-caliber kits.

By contrast the 9mm are actually more rare, mostly for European market - as back then in the US, 9mm in a 1911 was a sin.
    319 full-size RH,
    4 full-size LH,
    81 Commander RH,
    11 LeMay RH
    2 LeMay LH
    = 417
    (plus the conversion/mult-cal)

And they were no slouch in the looks department, at least, from a distance.

Both the AMT's hardballers / Longslides "liked a diet" of Ball ammo
but with some fine tuning would shoot 68's fine, swap out the spring
The Longslide was fun to shoot pins. Used the hardballer a lot for pin
shoots. were priced good back decades ago same with the others. Got
a Hard baller from a GS the owner was having issues with (cheap)

Was able to take out my brand stinkin new S&W 1911 E series today. What's the opposite of buyers remorse?

I mean it is a beautiful pistol but it shoots as good as it looks. Steel plate at 10-12 yrds was almost automatic with one small group of marks from the rounds in the center, even at a faster rate of fire. Trigger is stupid good and the heft absorbs the recoil making it a pleasure to shoot. I went through 100 rounds and felt like I could have done much more.

Went to the rifle range and after shooting and sighting in a rifle I thought "wonder how this 1911 does at some distance?" 9" steel plate at 100 yards........bang.......PING...... holy crap! Next 7 rounds of course close but no cigar but still, I was real close on all. Tough when the target is smaller than the front sight lol

Needless to say I am happy, I might even become a 1911 fan. I'll try to get some pics posted sometime soon.

S&W 1911's are extremely under-rated but owners, like you, know how good they really are. If I could ever get past the fish scale slide serrations, I wouldn't hesitate to get one.

Fish scales are actually not bad looking in person.

    TD

Don't get me wrong, I'm a big fan of S&W 1911's. The fish scale serrations are a very practical and effective surface for racking the slide but, they're a major departure from traditional. That said, I've come very close to buying an E Series that's gotten the S&W Performance Center treatment. I'm sure they would grow on me eventually!
