I went from a hard pelican type of case to a soft case and love it. I use one very similar to this, has backpack straps to carry rifle to range so I can carry my ammo and targets. Lots of storage, more so than the hard cases. Just my opinion :)

The PG shot gun range has a great beginners course for trap/clays. Its like 40/60 bucks and you can use their rifle. After the course go shoot some wobble trap and try different guns for a flat rental fee. This way you will know what you like to shoot.
