i just learned today that a friend of mine fell off 15 feet to the ground and landed on his back. 4 broken ribs and 3 lower back bones. he was flown to the nearest hospital from our hunting grounds and currently on icu. good news.. he doesnt need surgery but will be wearing a brace for some time.

Please use caution when using your tree stand/climber this year.. make sure the equipment is in proper shape and ALWAYS wear your safety harness!

Just picked up a Gorilla harness the other day. I haven't seen a better one on the market. Well worth the $150.

i have the summit seat-o-pants.. it works.. i like the clinch type rope instead of straps that goes around the tree.

    Agree, 100%.

I have several extra full body harnesses that I'll gladly donate (free) to anyone who needs one. If so, please PM me.

dont know.. i knew he moved his 2 man tree stand recently.. unless he was checking it out w/ his cousin... he fell on the way down.. from what i gathered the stand harness came loose. sad to hear it.. he's a die hard hunter too.. he's going to miss big portion of the hunting season.

needless to say he's pissed about that more than his injuries...if he's married his wife would be worried about the injuries more than him missing hunting...Go figure the difference between men and women's thinking :D

I fell about 15 feet a few years ago. Landed on the side of a hill and the leaves padded my fall. I was LUCKY.

my friend not so lucky.. he has to wear a body brace for 6months that is if he doesnt need pins and rods placed on his broken bones. he's lucky no rocks or stumps where we fell.. could have impaled himself.

I'll admit it, I do not use a harness. I read this thread the other day and shrugged it off. The one that came with my climber is a pain in the ass and hurts when its on.

So yesterday morning i was sitting there in my stand with my new boots and as I went to stand my boot slid. No big deal I didn't even feel like I was going to fall, but the thought and this thread crossed my mind.

The rest of the morning I said, that's it, I'm buying a harness. I went to Dick's after I got out of the woods, but didn't find one that I liked. I hunted last night, but was very careful as now slipping and falling is in my mind.

Today I searched the internet hard for a harness that I like, slim, the kind that clip on around my legs, and no vest. I think I'm going for either the HSS Ultra Lite Harness or the Summit Seat-O-The-Pants.

Thanks for the thread, my fiance hates when I spend money, but when I told her I was investing in a harness so I don't fall out of the tree and die she was happy.

Quick question do you guys hook the harness up and climb with it?

You can get the rope (for the tree) that you can connect the harness to while climbing. It has a cinch style knot that slides up and down but when pressure is placed on the tag end (connected to your harness) it tightens and stops the fall.

I had a seat from a hang on stand break out from underneath me. The only thing that saved my legs from being broken (or worse) on the stone pasture fence below me was my safety belt. It was just a $5 job from walmart but it held and kept me sitting on the foot platform. My bow did not get so lucky.

It is called a prusik knot. That system is awesome for fixed stands. When you put in the stand you anchor the rope above your stand and at the bottom. You just snap into the loop on the prusik and slide it up/down as you climb. The knot binds and locks when downward pressure is applied. This would also work for climbing stands if you climb the same tree all the time. You can buy these rigs in three packs. Of You are competent at knots you can do it yourself. I recommend a full body harness with tie-in point that is between the shoulder blades. You can still get a severe injury if you take a serious fall tied-in at the waist.
