There’s the “minimum” required by law which is good to know. Then there is the going above and beyond because, as you’ve seen, every officer isn’t going to know all the ins and outs of the law. Handguns must be unloaded and in an enclosed case or holster. I guess technically you could have your pistol in a zipper pouch on the passenger seat but kept out of sight by being buried in loaded mags. Though most would recommend more discretion.

The big area of gray for handgun transport is the when going to or from range, gunshot, etc. Its a broad spectrum. Some folks won’t stop for gas on the way to the range. Others are probably a little more liberal on the interpretation. I’m not aware of any case law on this.

Personally, I do carry loaded mags in my range bag among with a copy of the letter from the AG’s office stating there is no law against it.

I always keep my magazines empty. If I’m going to the range, I’d rather load them there. IMHO it is not worth the chance that you get pulled over and spook a policewomanman[\B]. While most will not overreact, it’s not worth it to me to chance it. This is especially true if you have the gun and mags in the same automobile cabin (not the trunk). Again, I am not claiming that it is illegal to have loaded mags or that my approach is for everyone. YMMV.

Remember, you are in a liberal stink-hole of a state where common sense has no place. Always err on the side of caution when it comes to weapons. They’ll make an example out of a hard-working, law-abiding citizen, and give the gang- banging, inner-city hood a slap on the wrist.

Always a safe bet to keep mags unloaded. I happened to know that if I go to a comp in PA, I can’t have loaded mags in PA unless I have a CCW

Got it. I'm not a lawyer, but you should be good if you're employer is okay with you keeping it locked in your box during work hours. There's always "don't ask, don't tell", but you're taking a serious risk if some nosey person discovers your secret.

I’m, no. That violates the law. That isn’t the definition of good to go.

To and from range/target shooting, hunting, gun smith, dog training, buying/selling it, YOUR property. That is basically it.

The hotel thing is probably okay. The language if the law is something like “your dwelling”, which a hotel would cover.

Though if hotel policy prohibits firearms that might leave on a skinny limb if discovered.

There are no other exceptions. Getting gas or going to a restaurant with it in your truck is likely to get you hosed it pulled over. A cop MIGHT excuse it, but going to OC on vacation for a week and one of the days you are going to the range so it’s in your truck for the week, definitely no go.

Long guns, BTW, have none of these restrictions (other than not loaded in or resting on a vehicle). Only handguns.

It just sank in , we're speaking with someone new to shooting, and new to MDS, so I can dust off my trusty bromide on the subject :

We are NOT having "A conversation " , we are having five different conversations at the same time.

    1. Actual Federal Law
    2. Actual State Law
    3. What a major LE *Agency* says on paper, official Website , etc .
    4. What random rank & rile LE Ofc happens to say
    5. What is wise for a Reasonable & Prudent gun owner to do .

    5 usually different things.

And #3 isn't necessarily correct . A certain State Police ( not Md ) was notorious for having deliberately incorrect information on their webpage .

Dumbest law, ever. Why? Because criminals don't follow laws.....just us slaves to the system. I'm about done with Maryland. Thanks for the input.

Aa far as taking your faithful firearm to go shooting , while at the Mid Atlantic Popular Beach Resort , I must point out Maryland does NOT have an exclusive upon Popular Beach Resorts .

Delaware and Virginia have Popular Beach Resorts . De and Va have much friendlier gun laws , where you would have no issues with your vacation plans . Start now , and by summertime you could be CCW'ing during your Beac Vacation.

Spend your Vacation $ where they value your Rights , and your safety.

Unless designated collector, law states to and from range, gun smith ect. By the letter of the law, stopping for gas, work ect is a no no.

The designated collector letter does NOT convey any collector status.

True. I prefer the OBX. It’s a much more conservative area, but is a long drive.

get a cable locked pistol safe. lock it under rear seat and to frame .Put un loaded mag. in console or glove box which ever one your registration isn't in all ready my 2 cents safes are around thirty bucks

I am no lawyer but common sense to me agrees with this. Don't travel with anything illegal obviously but don't ever keep any paperwork that you might have to produce in the same compartment as anything you do not want anyone else to see. Don't transport anything illegal but there is always the chance that they see your legal magazine when you get your paper work and suddenly want to search. Assume that they will see everything in the same box as your paperwork and they very well could decide that something legal is suspicious. Not worth the hassle. Again not a lawyer and could be wrong but that would be my 2 cents as well.

I always go to the extra effort and transport guns and ammo in separate locked containers. It doesn't have to be a good lock or a burglar proof container even a pistol rug with a dollar store lock will do. That way if you ever go to court the testimony will be it was in a locked container which puts you in a better light. Also I cover everything with tarps or shipping pads so nothing gun related is visible which makes "probable cause" much harder than an obvious gun case in plain view. Finally drive in a manner that you won't be stopped follow the traffic laws.

This is what I was hoping for..a lot of god informative feedback. I might just be over thinking a lot of it due to just being new to all of this. I get nervous just combining my ammo and gun into the same bag in the gun range parking lot.

Here's one for ya. I fly to Florida two or three times a year for vacation. I have a pelican case that I put my unloaded handgun in then next to it I put my two loaded mags in . The case is double locked and then placed in my travel luggage. I arrive at airport and unzip luggage, unlock case and then fill out paperwork and have it taped to the outside of case after locking everything back up (they want to make sure the gun is unloaded). So have I committed any crimes doing that. Oh yea, asking for a friend...

You don't have to go as far as OBX . Fenwick , De is right on the state line adjacent to Ocean City. Rehobith, Bethany , etc are similar distance as OC .

No , you wouldn't be marvelling at the .45 in my speedo . You'd be shaking you head at the guy with a fanny pack slung over his shoulder .
