2 weeks maybe in July when it's 90+ every day. 2 weeks in 70 degrees is just stink with stuff still stuck to the skull. And yes it smells bad.

The way I understood it from one of my taxidermy friends is, he's doing it throughout the season that way. I've always boiled mine though.

The process is called maceration. And most people who do it during the colder months are using fish tank heaters to keep the water at 90 degrees or so. This helps keep the bacteria active and working to decompose the flesh. The results are pretty amazing on small fragile boned stuff. Just google skull maceration. There's tons of info out there. I've never done it but been doing some reading and thinking of trying it out on some stuff next year (start small with like a squirrel or something).

Sounds like the most economical way to do it if on a large scale.

I had 2 foxes playing and sunning themselves in my yard today. They seemed very content, even with me in the yard.

They had somewhat of an orange coat. Could they actually be losing their winter coats already?

To stay on topic, I haven't had any deer near my yard in more than a month. They went away again for most of the season. Will be interesting to see if they come back in the next couple of weeks.

To all who scored this year, congrats. The those who did get one this year. Keep trying, hopefully next year will be better.

I tried to get my my couch potato to go out this afternoon but I think he od'd on chicken n dumplings when we were down at the Amish market earler today. A couple times this week I've seen 3 or 4 down in the woods and I've been putting corn out for them. We've only got a few days left before the season ends.

Well now that the season is over I went through my log book for one of the properties I hunt. I spent 81 hours hunting (not counting travel time, and time to walk in/out). I harvested 14 does, 3 bucks, and 2 antlerless for a total of 19 deer. That ends up being about 4.26 hours of hunting per harvest which is less than my normal average of 8 or 9 hours per harvest.

    Nice work 67!

I failed this year, though it was my first year trying. The most disappointing part came last weekend. An hour after I packed up last Saturday, a nice big 8 point walked right in front of my blind.

That's an impressive average, great job. I remember when I use to hunt at queenstown harbor golf links, came home with one everyday. Oh how I miss that place.
