As a Maryland resident, if you had to choose only one state non-resident CCW license, which state would you choose: Utah or Virginia? And why?

Would you have another candidate instead of the choices above if you could only choose one?

I'm really interested in your "why".

    Thanks for your wisdom.

New Hampshire, as I visit PA far more than any other state and PA still recognizes the New Hampshire Non-Resident permit.

Yep. As of right now, NH wins hands-down b/c of PA.

Otherwise, I relied exclusively on FL for many years until I had family move to WA, so I added UT to get WA. Then Kane happened, so I added NH to pick up PA.

Never saw a need for VA, which I don't believe gets me anything that FL, UT, and NH don't already cover.

I think the Utah would be best. I have my Utah permit. There are more states that formally reciprocate and recognize the Utah compared the Virginia. I have attached some links for you to look more into them.

    Utah Information:
    https://bci.utah.gov/concealed-firearm/reciprocity-with-other-states/

    Virginia Information:
    http://virginiaconcealed.com/reciprocity/

We used Mid-Atlantic Firearms Training, instructor Brian Fletcher for the Utah CCW. He was very great instructor.

    I hope this helps!
Do you visit these states? Not trying to be an asshat, but I have, along with New Hampshire, both VA and Utah and they are of almost use to me as I rarely go anywhere but PA.

So I thought (incorrectly I guess) that with Kane being out in PA that her Reciprocity reversal would likely be turned around. Im guessing that that is just wishful thinking at I need to get a NH permit?

To my knowledge the NH NR permit is pretty simple to get.

Application is straight forward and no classes required.
I have been waiting for a month for my check to be cashed by NH. The cashed check is the sign you will soon be receiving the permit in the mail.

I agree on New Hampshire- it covers PA, VA and NC. Those are the states I travel to most often. West of The Mississippi, Utah would be the permit of choice.
Plus, NH is pretty easy to acquire.

So for me than, the best part of getting the Utah permit was taking the class with Bryan Fletcher, who is an awesome instructor and covered way more than basic requirements. I need to add NH than for PA.

Does NH also cover MD? just kidding :lol2:

Sounds almost too good to be true, and it would be simple IF the non-resident applicant had a resident permit from their state of residence. I went to their website, and read that they'll only issue a NR permit IF the applicant either has a resident permit from their home state, or a letter from LEO if their state doesn't require a carry permit.

Not trying to be a dick, just hoping for clarification. I'd really like to be able to carry in PA. Like most of us, I don't have a MD permit.

    from their website:

    ALL LICENSE APPLICANTS PLEASE NOTE:
A non-resident pistol license will not be issued unless you supply:
    1) A copy (front & back) of your valid concealed carry license issued by the state, county, or town in which
    you reside.
OR IF YOU RESIDE IN A STATE THAT DOES NOT REQUIRE A LICENSE TO CARRY CONCEALED:
    (Pursuant to Saf-C 2102.03)
    2) A letter from your local police department signed by an authorized representative indicating the following:
    a) The state does not require a license to carry concealed for residents; b) To the best of the local police department’s knowledge, the applicant:
    i. Is not a drug user of controlled drugs or narcotics without orders from a physician;
    ii. Has not been treated for mental illness, emotional problems, or confined to a mental health facility;
iii. Has no domestic violence petitions that would prevent possession of weapons under federal law; and iv. Has not been arrested or convicted of a misdemeanor domestic violence.
A license to carry a loaded handgun may be issued for PROTECTION or ALL PROPER PURPOSES. One or more
of these reasons must be noted on the application, in the space provided for reason(s) for which you make application to carry a pistol in New Hampshire.

What I am taking away a from this then is that in order to get an NH permit, you need to have permit issued to you from your state of residence first. So this begs the question, (Ill pose to Eruby since he mentioned above he has the the NH) If you have a NH permit, do you also have a MD permit?

I originally thought that NH would issue non res permits similar to Utah.

Unless they very recently changed, NH required another Permit. At this time not necessarily home state, but from some state.

IF Pa is of importance to you, then get NH as second NR. But if only occasional travel to Pa, with ANY Permit you may conceal in your vehicle, and OC on foot, avoiding city limits of Phila.

If you plan to actually go to FL, then get FL.

Va advantage is they will accept virtually anything as training equivalent, and many of us would already be covered. Disadvantage is $100 renewals.

Utah disadvantage is requiring training from Utah certified instructor. But not much of disadvantage, as lots of locally based UT instructors, with competitive pricing. Advantage is inexpensive renewals.

NH did recently change. Case thread should be in the National forum.

Basically, its now apply, pay and carry. I don't think the application itself has changed, and still says to list your other permit info, but you just skip that stuff.
