How do you know you've been shot at?

With the random shooting near Rockville courthouse and Metro lately, I just wonder if there's an indication/sight of being shot at so we know when to dodge the follow up bullets.

for reals.. if you hear gunshots.. take cover... if you are shot.. you'd know it.

...if it's close enough, you'll hear a zip followed by a pop. If it's further away, you should exit stage right or left --->pronto. Holes appearing unexpectedly in permeable stuff around you is a sure giveaway.

There needs to be good reason to run toward the sounds of gunfire.

Incredibly, the woman who was wounded claimed she did not know immediately that she had been shot. Not sure how that happens.
