Wanting to buy another semi-auto pistol before MOM makes me submit to fingerprinting. Leaning towards the Springfield XDM in .45 ACP. I like the polymer frame and the high capacity. Problem is, for the action, my preference has always been SA & DA.

Any suggestions for a good/great SA/DA pistol that I should consider instead?

Sig 229 as the SRT is awesome.

FN has some good offerings in plastic if that's your thing.

Also the Beretta 92/96 is a popular option.

Any CZ variants and the HK...... Sig 226 is also a good gun

For the money, the CZ75 variants are a top notch

I just saw your interest in 45acp..... well the xd, glock and the walther are not a true da /sa guns. If you are interested in a striker system then any of the above are a nice choice, along with the m&p.

For da /sa system, it's hard to beat either the HK USP or the HK 45 pistols. If yiu don't mind the bulk then the Rugers are fine too

My personal preference is the HK variants in the da /sa fcs.

CZ92 (only 45acp offerred by CZ that i know of) is a sweet shooting gun but the mags are not readily available and the grip is not ideal for my taste

My preference is Sig 226/229 or H&K USP/USPc/P30...Sig and H&K both have a variety of trigger options that are defensive triggers and very well-liked. If you are looking for a SA/DA that is target-capable, a H&K USP9SD (4.7 inch barrel) with a Match Trigger is likely to please, plus you can add a can down the road.

If you want a ridiculous awesome target shooter and like SA, get a Sig 226 X5...it's a stupid crazy awesome target shooter.

I have the P229. Absolutely love it and besides you can not go wrong with a Sig. The trigger takes a little getting use to, but besides that, I have nothing bad to say about it.

I agree with your direction. I have a M&P 9mm, and am moving away from striker fired.

I first got some quality time with DA/SA when Herself wanted a PPK/S in the house, like James Bond uses. So I picked one up. The more I shoot it, the more I just love that one. And further, I really came to appreciate DA/SA and how it made sense for home protection.

But the PPK/S is a difficult one for a woman to handle, because the slide springs are very tight and it is difficult for a woman to rack them.

So next came a HK P30. Polymer framed, hammer fired, DA/SA. I love this pistol. Shoots very well. Wonderful grip. I'd give the trigger a solid B+ to A-. Some object to it having a wee bit of play before it firms up and goes to work, but frankly that is a bit picky in my book.

I hope to be bringing home and shooting a new Sig P229 Enhanced Elite in the next week or so. The E2 grip fits me very well, and I like the short release trigger. Until I have some serious range time on it, I'll hold off on more commentary and recommendations, but suffice to say I have high expectations.

There are a huge number of options within the Sig lineup. Almost all DA/SA. You can go with just about any frame size and mag size and type of round you may like. Single stacked or double stacked.

Sigs are not cheap. A cheaper option is in the CZ lineup. I have not fired one so cannot comment. But look in that direction if budgets are an issue.

Putting my money where my mouth is, after deciding to go in the same direction as you, I went with a HK P30 and Sig P229.

CZ rules in terms of otb trigger and the fcg.

I chose the HK out of caliber (45) and ergonomics requirement. Having said that I would not hesitate getting another CZ if it wasn't for the caliber preference.

I also have a g21 (glock) 3rd gen sf for the10mm conversion duties and this gin shines in all Glock goodness

I wish I could praise the Sig 220 in the current production form factor, but IMHO the heavy forged slide did not do any favors for this model. Only Sig I would consider is the M11 and the 226 in 9mm.

Sigs IMHO were great in their original form factor - the light weight stamped steel slide with pinned breach block that compensated for their high bore axis

If the sig price was not a concern, then the HK will shine in the current model line up, especially in 45acp

Just my 2cents and not meant to start a flame thrower session :D

CZ75 and it's clones. EAA Witness line is my favorite. You can get slides and barrels in 22-45ACP in short ,medium, long/comped slides that all go on the same frame. The other CZ's mentioned are modernizations of this platform. The Beretta 92's I think are SA/DA.

I like a consistent trigger pull personally so all my DA/SA's have found themselves in the back of the safe. That said I love my FNP. If you are looking at .45's, FN has a few nice offerings such as a tactical and competition model. Good luck in whatever you choose.

Do you have a safety, a decocker or both? Where do you want the safety, on the frame or on the slide. Answer those questions and it will really really narrow your choices down.

    Good point!

But then you are still stuck with three or four or five makes

    HK- all options
    FN -??
    SW- safety available on m&p
    Beretta - decock
    CZ...... decock or safety

    LOL

One more thing on HK :

Safety can be engaged in both the DA and SA condition

Slide can be cocked with the safety ENGAGED in both the DA and SA conditions to conduct either a slide press check for safety, or to chamber a round. Kind of a unique feature :D
