Has anyone been able to garner the support of local, county, or state law enforcement? I have written letters to county sheriffs that may be on our side but so far have not gotten any responses. I know that 127 local sheriffs, nationwide, have vowed not to enforce any gun control laws on the national level, but what about here in Maryland?

I have a feeling that any LEO here in MD that even hinted that they would not enforce the new laws (if passed) would be served his or her walking papers in minutes..

LEOs have all taken a similar oath to the one I took to support and defend the constitution. Seems there will come a time when that oath will need to be taken seriously.

I agree with your points that MD could potentially put "the pinch" on any active LEO that came out in our support. What about retired LE? I would assume that the opinion/stance of a 20 or 30 year veteran would certainly hold some weight.

Sheriff Doug Mullendore of Washington County has not said that he will not enforce the new laws but was in the local paper indicating his opposition to the AWB and mag capacity limitation citing common sense. He knows and said that criminals will always have the option of obtaining these illegally.
I am trying to see if he can come down on the sixth.

I also know a few LEO, that I will leave unnamed that are looking forward to turning in their badge if there is a gun grab..

I wonder if they'll come over to 'the dark side'.

Which brings to mind a Star Wars quote.

Powerful you have become, the dark side I sense in you.

It would be nice to get some LEO's to Annapolis on the 6th to support us...especially the red county sheriffs, but it won't happen.

The rank and file may certainly be with 'us' but I highly doubt you'll see any agency head in this state coming out and saying that they won't enforce it, if passed. As most of us know, police commissioners and chiefs are appointed by a political figure. If they don't toe the line, then they will be replaced by someone that will. As for sheriffs, whatever state aid they receive can easily be taken away if they express any anti AWB sentiments.

For now, the best that any regular LEO can do is write/call/email as a regular citizen if they don't want to face any retribution from their agency. LEOs do not have the full benefit of the 1st Amendment when it comes to speech that is related to their job.

This might sound strange, but honestly I dont WANT law enforcement officers picking which laws they want to enforce. Ignoring something thats not blatant (the same as they would a burned out taillight) is one thing, but flat out refusing to enforce laws that are legally sound and have gone through our established system (though stupid and potentially constitutionally unjust) scares me. THAT is something we see in third world, police-controlled societies. I want the laws changed, not selectively enforced. If they want to threaten to quit or complain with the backing of their badge, great.

Showing up in uniform in an unofficial capacity at an event would be career ending I'd guess.

I don't expect it to happen and that's fine. They could just show up like the rest of us and add their voices.

    Slightly OT ...

hmmmm ... I don't doubt your sincerity in suggesting that we are a country of laws, but ...

Is Pres. Obama selectively enforcing the law, violating his oath?

So, substiture OWE'Malley for Obama and we have the same situation here in the PRofMD. Whether it's sanctuary status, disregard of DOMA, gambling initiatives, or school achievement standards, if the chief executive of the country or state can ignore the law with IMPUNITY, why not LEOs with the same sworn duty to The Constitution ?

And now, back to your regularly scheduled thread :sign01:

I don't think we should politicize the police either, but I think this is something that the legislators are overlooking that we may be able to bring to light. If no LEO is calling for an "assault weapons" or "high capacity" ban, the professionals who fight crime daily must not feel that there is a need for one... In essence, the silence of the police on this issue may even prove to be equally in our favour. Hmmmm.....

A vocal support that you speak of would not happen.

Sheriff positions are elected and they likely could take a political posture.
