  • Hey guys, I am buying a 7.62x39 Molot VEPR semi-auto rifle. The price looks good and I really want to buy it as my first firearm. I know if I mod anything, I have to be 922R compliant. I'll get some standard capacity mags from VA.
The minimum age to purchase a rifle online from centerfiresystems.com is 21, and I am 19. F***K! I need it now!

    1. Why do I have to be 21 to buy a rifle online, and 18 to own one?

    2. If I can't buy it due to age restriction, is it legal for someone else to buy the rifle who is of age, then sell it to me? this transaction illegal for handguns.

    3. Do I have to fill anything out with the ATF? Also, do I need a background check when taking the rifle in delivery?

    4. Can i even buy an AK? Is the "assault weapons" (cough... bulls**t...cough) classification attached to the AK?

No to #2,3,4; by Maryland law you cannot purchase an Ak47 until you are 21, however, the Vz58 is perfectly legal for you to purchase. I'm getting one in a few months myself.

Being 18 means you are allowed to purchase certain types of firearms, but only the ones that are not regulated by the federal government or the state government.

This is called a straw purchase. It is a federal crime that equals serious prison time for you and the purchaser. Bad idea.

If you're looking for advice on circumventing the law, you're not going to find it here. Best advice, find a different gun that you can legally own.

Yeah I know know that straw purchases are a nightmare, I thought that you could own an AK at 18, but the website sells it at 21. I now know that the AK is only obtainable after 21 in MD.

Or just wait until you are of age to legally purchase

That's going to be my plan. I'll ask my parents to buy it for me as a graduation present.... probably won't happen though.

MD makes what should be simple so difficult. In almost any other state you would be able to buy an AK clone at the age of 18.

If the parents will not buy one for a graduation gift, start saving $10 a week when you can afford that. You would have a nice gun buying savings when you turn 21.

The VEPR's are sooo cheap at $500, I wanted to buy one before their gone. They WILL be harder to get or expensive once I become 21.

If your sense of urgency is a result of Obama's comment in last nights debate, don't worry... it's highly unlikely that the availability of AKs or VEPRs is going to change in the near future. There isn't nearly enough support in Congress for it and the Russians are happy to keep selling boatloads of them to us.

I would look into a VZ.58 as mentioned, it's similar to an AK in many ways and not on the regulated list. In many ways they are an improvement.

The VEPR-12 is probably going to drop in price after the initial offering... just like all the other VEPRs have. So while they are very cool I wouldn't be in a rush to buy one of those either. I remember being young and every dollar counted. Spend it wisely! Especially since you'll want to be able to feed whatever you buy.

Another thought for the op: Have you considered an SKS or a Ruger Mini-14? Both are unregulated and legal for an 18 year old to own.

I am not too worried about Obama (I am worried more on Mitt considering that he was a co-signer for the 94-04 assault weapons ban.)

The problem is that the VEPR's are under limited importation by WPA, wolf performance ammo/arms. I cannot be sure when new VEPR's will turn up again. (
I am looking for a brand new AK, and most VZ 58 are used. The reason I want it new isn't just because, rather for assurance. I don't want to go to a gunsmith 2 years down the line over a misaligned trunnion or something.

Shotgun ammo is pricier per round than surplus 7.62.... I am starting to have second thoughts... Can I go to the range enough on a college students' budget? maybe.

There is a guy in MD, the other side of the Bay bridge, his name is Mike. He is an Industry Partner here. He has his ATF manufacturers license. He can make any AK clone you want if you or he can get the parts. If there is an issue, he deals with it.

There's a lot of politics behind VEPR imports but nothing I've seen so far has led me to believe that it's a limited engagement this time around.

VEPRs were being imported a decade ago, but not in quantity and they didn't sell well since they were considerably more expensive than other AKs at the time. That has changed.

Then, Izhmash (maker of the standard AK) basically sued Molot (maker of the VEPR) over unlicensed production and essentially performed a hostile takeover and shuttered the factory for several years. Izhmash then claimed near-bankruptcy, and as part of the ensuing negotiations, they freed Molot to start producing again.

Given Russia's edict not to buy any more AK-pattern rifles for the foreseeable future, both Molot and Izhmash are VERY motivated to make up sales by selling sporters to the US. If WPA drops out another importer will pick them up, just like Saigas have been handled by multiple different parties over the years.
