    UPDATE 7/12/2012:

    WE DID IT!!!!!!!!!

    FREAKING A !!!!

NOW, COME NOVEMBER - SPREAD THE WORD AND GET OUT AND VOTE TO TRASH THIS GERRYMANDERING!

(sorry for the caps lock - I'm really excited!)

    :beer::beer::beer:

    All,

I've received a petition in the mail from my Delegate, Steve Schuh (R).

We have a chance to get OweMalley's gerrymandered new districts overturned by referendum on the ballot in November. I'm sure you all know why these new districts are bad news - outright voter suppression for anyone who's no a Democrat.

I've signed my petition and mailed it back. If you care about trying to keep MD from becoming a 100% Dem state in the U.S. House, I suggest that you do the same!

Just go here and follow the directions:

    https://mdpetitions.com/redistricting/

Print it, sign it, and return it. They need as many signatures as possible by the end of the month in order to keep this from dying.

Signed. As a former Democrat even this disgusted me.... I do not wish Frederick to be turned into Rockville or Gaithersburg no matter how much Owe Malley wants that.

This is really important. It's simply criminal how badly the democratic machine has abused their authority on this one. There's at least two instances I know of in Harford/Northern Balt. Co. alone where they literally stretched districts to surround just one house, in each case the home of a Republican politician.

    Indeed!

Downloaded, will get wife involved tonight.

    Thanks

Great! They need to turn in 18,579 VALID signatures by May 31. They know some sigs will be invalidated, so they are going for 24,000 sigs by the end of the month. I believe they only have around 10,000 so far from what I gleaned from the letter that I received.

If you haven't signed, and you care about gerrymandering, please take action!

And here's an article on the topic that from the Washington Post today:

    Statewide.

Their website says it better than I can:

"In fact, redistricting affects every household in the state. Maryland should have districts that represent communities and groups of people. As an example, a district should allow the City of Baltimore to be represented by a congressman devoted to their causes, Anne Arundel County to theirs, Prince George’s County to their causes and so on.

Maryland’s approved Congressional map purposefully spreads out minority votes so that they cannot compete with establishment politicians. African American and Hispanic Districts are split up to keep white-establishment liberals in control and to minimize minority voting power. Rural voters and Republicans are combined into one large area in District 1 and then separated and combined with densely-populated urban areas in other districts to snuff out their voting power."

I'm a Democrat myself, but this gerrymandering disgusts me, and I signed the petition a few weeks agao. As much as I identify as a Democrat, I don't want my party (or any party) to hold monopolistic power over government. When that happens, you wind up with the most radical ideologues on the fringes of the party free to do whatever they please with no real opposition. Pushing red districts off the map by force is a tyrannical and undemocratic way to run a state. It's despotic seeds like this that grow into single-party "People's Republics" where the Party tells the people what to do instead of the other way around.
