1966 is when handgun sales were required to have background checks in MD. 1993 the law was passed for private sale background checks for handguns.

What I don't understand is why this little factoid isn't paraded out every time the anti-gun crowd espouses universal background checks as the "common sense" solution...Maryland has had universal background checks on handguns (and scary black rifles for that matter) FOR OVER 20 YEARS, and Baltimore is still one of the murder capitals of the United States.
