As others recommend, I would first get your hands on a variety and see what you like best.

However, I would also be another vote for the Glock G19. After all I have learned working in this industry; these are the most popular choice for very good reason. They are reliable, simple, perfect size, and have endless customization support. So if you want to change it in anyway to suit our needs; the sky is the limit. It's an all-around great choice.

Either way, there are tons of options out there so I'm sure you will find the perfect one.

My wife was reluctant to get into guns / shooting for many years. I finally convinced her to purchase a handgun before the new restrictive laws took effect in MD, 2013. She picked out a Sig 229/9mm and now loves the gun and shooting.

Mostly for fun and home defense.

    Cool.

The Ruger GP100 22lr is a fantastic first gun. Will last several lifetimes, and is formable for self defense in skilled hands. Fun and cheap to shoot too. Just not small enough to carry practically.

So I'd go with (G19), the Bersa, or sure, why not, the CZ-83.

When I was running shooting classes several years ago, I had new and women's only classes. The hands down favorite handgun was the medium frame revolver shooting 38 special. The six inch barrel was the favorite followed closely by the 4' inch barrel. Semiautos weren't considered much when the students made their choices.

    The CZ83 is not C&R.
The CZ82 is C&R however and a great gun choice.
Another C&R pistol for consideration might be a Mak.
I have a beautiful EG that I use for CCW and absolutely love it. Never, ever jams, accurate, 100% reliable, fits my small hands like a glove.
For a Non-C&R pistol, I would suggest the CZ RAMI. You'll have to do some searching, but these are great guns especially if you intend to CCW some day.

I'm a member at FreeState. Typically, I shoot on Mondays or Tuesdays. I have a Bersa 380 and a Glock 19 (among many others). If you want to coordinate something, I'd be glad to let you try them.

    Sending you a PM.

I was going to go to FreeState tomorrow but have decided against it. It's crazy in there on the weekends. Considering Frederick to hit the gun show and Machine Gun Nest. We'll see how I feel when I wake up in the morning.

Weeknights other than Friday are best.

like everyone else says, go to the range, handle a lot of the guns, and shoot several that you like to find the best fit. I prefer Continental over Freestate, and they have a huge selection of rental guns. I'm not a Glock fan but LOVE my CZ. I would also suggest a Sig P229 or newer variant for your size.

Forget the 380. IMO, it has become obsolete due to the current crop of small 9mm's now available. The ammo is generally lower priced and has more options for different types of usage.Trying different models is a great suggestion. One I would highly recommend is a Sig P239 in 9mm. Good luck.

I have to respectfully disagree about .380 being obsolete. Along with me, Glock, Ruger, Taurus, Bersa, Smith & Wesson, Browning, Beretta, and many others would disagree as they sell plenty of these. One reason that .380 is a great fit for sub-compact carry guns is it has less recoil. I know several ladies (and guys) who like .380 over 9 because of the lower recoil. I have two guns in .380 and most other pistol calibers between .22 and .45. You can't disregard the fact that she already likes .380. In a defensive situation, comfort and confidence are of a high value because there are so many things that mitigate against the skills we build in the controlled environments of ranges.

I agree, the .380 Colt Auto Pistol is still a relevant caliber, even with the new smaller 9x19's.

My backup is a P3AT w/ Crimson Trace loaded with Buffalo Bore 100 gn tempered lead bullets. However, I would not recommend a P3AT to a casual shooter as it is small and thin and can jump out of the hand if you are not careful. A CZ-83, Bersa or Beretta 84, 85 etc would a better choice in the caliber for people using it as a primary weapon.

That bersa 380 seems like a good match since she already likes the 380. I am hoping my old lady likes the 380 tomorrow so that we can move her up from the 22 that she wants at the moment.

When I used a .22 in HQL, it just didn't feel real. I just figure it's a gun, it's supposed to have some kick to it. Not as much as the 45 I tried last year. It was hard to stop it from popping out of my hands.

I've never tried a 9mm so that definitely needs to be on my list to try.

I wish there was a Women On Target class coming up I could recommend you to, but I haven't seen a schedule come up.
typically at those we have up to 10 instructors/line coaches bring their personal collections out to the range for the students to try.
