I posted this in the Water Cooler, but since no one responded there, I thought perhaps it is more appropriate here.

Hi, everybody. What's the protocol or consensus on gun customers being put on multiple waiting lists for a certain product?

I'm interested in a particular handgun -- in this case, the Smith & Wesson M&P Shield in 9mm -- and it looks like no one in the state has any available for sale, and no one seems to have any clear sense of when they'll get some.

If I ask a gun dealer to put my name of a waiting list, should I not ask other dealers to put me on their Shield waiting list too, and should I not continue to shop around?

Or is it generally accepted practice to get on a handful of lists and jump at the first one that's available, or jump at the best price, and then inform all the others?

Just trying to be a good citizen of Second Amendment Nation.

I don't see anything wrong with being on multiple waiting lists. You never know, one place could get some and the others could be days or weeks before they gets some.

I've never had one of our IPs or any other dealer tell me they'd object. Unless it's a special order, they can always sell the item to someone else. Most dealers I know won't take a special order unless they know it's something the distributor has in stock or is regularly available.

A waiting list is not a deposit or special order. If you get one somewhere else, just let the other dealer know. M&P Shields are very easy to sell(when available).

I see no problem being on multiple waiting lists as long as when you do get one, you inform the other dealers that you have found one and are no longer interested. It's only common courtesy (which is pretty uncommon these days in my opinion). Now a special order is different, you should only special order something that you will purchase when it comes in.
