Why would you want to sell it? I completed my C308 and Mosin, for now. Next will be the Vepr in 54r with 23"

I have the one with the 23" barrel. Sweet looking gun if you're into the black rifle look.

For one, I would not want to shoot corrosive ammo out of mine. I shoot plenty out of my mosins, which are easy to clean but find cleaning my AK-74 is a bit of a bear. I am always nervous I missed a spot in the flash suppressor, gas tube, etc etc and it will rust up immediately. For a gun that cost nearly double my 74 and 10x my mosins, its not worth the risk IMHO. And yes, I keep a bottle of windex in my range bag and know the tricks of corrosive ammo.

I also am a man who is nearly obsessed with precision and accuracy. Unfortunately, I don't find the VEPR/AK series to have it to the level I would like. Minute of man at 300 yards? Sure thing, but not a deer's vitals.

I've been thinking I'd rather have an FN FNAR with a heavy barrel. Semi-auto .308 with 20 round mags and MOA accuracy. Plus I reload .308 which helps keep ammo costs not too far from surplus 54R.

That make sense, good things MUST come in pairs! Where do you get the VEPRs from? And is the 54r in 23"? The only place I know that will do the transfer is Duffy.

Atlantic is about the best place to get one. Shooters Supply in Berlin will do Vepr Transfers.

Agreed on the ammo. I did't buy it to shoot nasty old ammo out of it. I only buy new production steel to feed it. I've though about trying to get some brass to do some reloads and see how that works out.

I love the all black tactical look of all rifles to include the VEPR. I don't think it's legal in Maryland now? even the "hunter/sport" model with the thumdhold is merely legal. As far as cleaning after shooting corrosive ammo, I totally understand the paranoid part that you might miss a spot on a thousand dollar rifle.

As far as accuracy, I don't that care that much because I know they are not a Remington 700. I like them because they are what they are! Like the C308, is that a great rifle? I said no but that's what I can own legally, affordable and I always admired the HK legendary since I was a little kid, you would see one of those HK sniper rifles, and you just wished to have one.

I purchased mins after the SB281. The transferring dealer told me parts are not interchangeable with an AK so therefore its not an AK......dunno. Don't feel like getting into that debate so I'm just going to leave it at that.

I shoot the heck out of milsurp ammo out of mine. I don't do anything at the range. Soak parts in hot water/balistol mix in the evening when I get home. Not THAT hard to clean. Take wood foreend off, put barrel down in the utility sink, and get soapy! Got mine pre-sb281 and still no rust. I've been looking for a SVD type buttstock but part of me says to put all poly/aluminum furniture on it so I can clean it even faster (just turn the hose on it at first!)

Good thing about shooting corrosive ammo: Once you pull the trigger once, might as well pull it a 100+ more times;) Takes the same time to clean either way!

No idea how you can reload 308 for close to 54R. Cheapest plinking rounds I can make are $0.33. >50% more than 54R. And I don't have to chase brass;)

Good to hear that. I got mine 54r surplus within these two years after I got my first Mosin and they were on sale for around 23 cents around shipped. Oh yeah I got a ton of them! Now I am so tempted to get the Vepr

Corrosive ammo isn't scary, just not put-in-safe-fuggedatboutit easy.

No seriously, it'll pit your barrel at a fraction of the price of "good" ammo. Stay away. So I can have what's left of the surplus.

I have a decent pile of 54r and shooting 308 definitely quit pricy for me. I said I hold off buying it is because the legality of it. And sure, at least two FFLs said its ok and I respect that.

I like it, but had been thinking of selling or trading my Vepr to get a M1 Garand. I am really running out of room and as much as I like the Vepr, I don't always have time to completely clean it as should, but I do have a small stockpile of non corrosive ammo. They are fairly accurate, more accurate than a typical AK or battle rifle but no sniper or target rifle.

I can load 2000 fps with these bullets that are 10 or 11 cents:

    http://www.xtremebullets.com/308-150-FP-p/xc308-150fp-b0500.htm

Or go FMJ for 18 cents a bullet:

    https://www.wideners.com/itemdetail.cfm?item_id=8980&dir=278|281|1079|1090|1727

I also have a bunch of "seconds" Sierra Matchking bullets I bought for my 30-06.

Total cost of each round being about a quarter which is just a few cents more than I can find surplus 54R for these days.

And I can always shoot surplus plastic .308 for ~19 cents a pop

Correct me if I am wrong, the plastic training ammo need to manual cycle each round fired, that would be a pain in the butt for me. Maybe you have gotten it before the price went up, but I just checked it with shipping, I am looking at around .23 cents a round. I think I better off just get some steel 308 at .40 per round when they are on sale. Lastly, by watching the YouTube video of the guy shooting that plastic ammo, he said it feels like a 9mm which I can tell as well. So why?

That's how you're doing it;) POI ends up being too different than regular loads then. I also don't use copper plated in the rifles as they recommend only up to 1500fps and I sometimes shoot through a suppressor too. hi-techammo sells the cheapest M80 bullets I know of. I wonder what is the cheapest powder that can reload 308. IIRC, I end up around $0.16 for just the powder and primer.

$0.165 here. :innocent0 I might have LOTS of it (and the HK hosts + special bolt to use it) But $0.20 54R is still the king for the most **BANG** for the buck.

I like my 54R vepr so much I've been searching for a Yugo M76 in 8mm mauser:D Not sure if I want to get a AWO pre-built or get a parts kit and build it.

Edit: Unless you have a HK/PTR 91 w/ the special blowback training bolt, the blue plastic stuff wont cycle a semi auto. So there isn't really a point unless you have the above. A very creative type could probably lighten an AK bolt or an AR10 buffer/BCG to get one of those to cycle too. But I've never seen it done. The special HK bolt is pure blowback.

Stocked up when they were .16 cents a round. My wife thought I was a little compulsive, but now she agrees it was a smart decision. Now I need a spare 54R bolt. What ever happened with Atlantic gauging interest in importing spare parts?

Kind of off topic, but whatever happened to the Russian sanctions? I figured the VEPRs would dry up pretty fast afterwards. Limited demand maybe? To still have some available for $830 is pretty surprising.

The only weak point IMO is the single-stack mag. I wish they'd gone with a double-stack similar to the PSL. Still waiting on CSS Spec to come out with some nice steel aftermarkets...

Depending on the firearm you will need to manually cycle the bolt. Some have replacement bolts available designed for this ammo. I know available for G3/HK91 series.

And sales are to be had, especially when Sportsmans Guide has it in stock. Free shipping with a $10 gift card is pretty coming for members.

And same reason I bought a 22LR rifle with the same trigger and weight as my hunting rig. Practice everything as close as possible to the field, just cheaper and with less fatigue over a full day at the range.
