I have a basic ar by Stag , with about 200 rounds through it. Is it too late to put a better quality bolt group in it? I already have a Spikes Tactical bolt group for it.

Is it ever "too late"? I don't think I get it, not being a smart @zz I'm serious. I thought a bcg is good to swap whenever as long as you retain proper headspacing

No. Don't do it. Your standard carbon phospate BCG are all the same if mil-spec. Keep the Spikes for a spare but, if you do swap make sure to check headspace.

Bolt heads wear over time. I can almost guarantee if I swap the bolt head from my 12K round upper to a freshly built upper, it'd eat a Field II gauge with no issue.

I'm an ''if it ain't broke, don't fix it'' kinda guy. I am pro upgrading-replacing warn parts. Extractor springs wear, extractors wear, Firing pins wear, carrier keys loosen. You need to keep track of all these things and replace/repair them as your round count increases. That BCG is the brains of the rifle. Just keep it healthy. My 2 cents worth.
