There's a great thread going on 45s, but that fellow cared about size. I've got pretty big hands and won't be carrying off my property, so I'm pretty flexible in that department and I thought that might alter the advice.

I'm interested in the enhanced capacity of non-1911s. I'm very much interested in reliability (in my experience with my dad's guns only the 22s were entirely all around reliable, they're a bit older, so I'm hoping things have improved greatly on that front. )

I'd like to be able to try out a laser on the thing.

Budget has it's limits. But even if I decide not to spring for the top of the line Kimber I'd at least like to know if those $1,600+ guns really are the best, so feel free to mention them.

Chad, not a fan of the M&Ps in .45ACP? I know I have my personal issues with M&Ps (namely that I haven't yet found an M&P that I could shoot better than the comparable Glock or XD), but I'd be interested in hearing any particular reasons why it missed the list for you.

    That said, awesome list.

They are great but are not really Hi Cap. Just like the HK45.

Both fantastic guns but not really Hi Cap IMO.

I was excited about the XDM because I'd like something at least somewhat thin (for a .45) for carry that holds more than 6+1.

But I guess that is not a good choice due to lube problems?

Thanks! Though to clarify terms, when you say "ergonomic" do you mean "small" or do you mean it more generally, like you don't like their grips and/or they like to slice your hand.

Also on the trigger, are you rating them by the trigger pull weight?

Yeah, when I say not ergonomic I mean the grips are on the large side (Hard on people with smal hands) and the controls may not be easy to manipulate if you have smal hands.

Even with small hands you can shoot them though. My boys when they were 10 years old biys could and did fire all of the above guns without issue.

Tehy dont cut of injure you they are just large.

I wouldnt dismiss getting a XD because of the lube issues.

Just use good gun lube and keep the striker channel/assembly clean. Avoid Miltec, WD40, and grease and youll be fine.

I run grease on the rails of my XD-9. I've put a close to 10,000 rounds through the gun and have not had a single issue. Great gun. Springfield did the trigger and added a
Bar-Sto barrel. Springfield says not to use grease. What should you use on the rails?

Running Grease on the rails is not going to cause issues unless theres enough to migrate into the striker assembly.

Keep running the grease on the rails and run 30W Syn Motor Oil or a comparable Premium Gun Oil on the rest of the parts. (Not Miltec)

I've been using Break-Free CLP to, well, clean, lubricate, and protect my firearms so far. Any problems with continuing to do that with the above .45s?

Breakfree is a great Great Protectant but a marginal Cleaner and Lube. It wont fail you or your gun. If you want more lubrication just use Syn Grease on the Rails or throw some Syn 40 to 50W motor Oil in it after spraying it with breakfree.

There wont be any issues with using these 2 products together.

I have both the H&K USP Full-size .45 and the M&P .45, for me, being of a smaller frame and small/medium hand-size, I prefer the M&P. That being said, the H&K is an excellent piece, never ftf/fte, pretty accurate too, although the trigger leaves something to be desired - over 3000 rounds easy. The M&P's also pretty nice, adjustable back-straps help, and go to Va. and get you some 14 round mags. Whatever floats your boat.

I have an HK mark 23 and I have big hands too . It fits well and is damn accurate . My 1911s have been getting seriously neglected since I got it .

The only thing that kills the HK USP I own, IMO is the trigger, long take-up, long reset. Aside from that, If you want to spend the money, go for it. But as a more cost-effective solution, I like the M&P .45, the trigger is slightly better than a G21 IMO, and fits me much better than the G21. That and it's authorized as a duty weapon, which the XD can't say even though it's been out longer.

    Wow, Chad. Nice summing up!

Very happy with my G21sf. Next chunk of cash that floats my way will put an rmr on it. With the Kriss mag extensions it'll be a very nice nightstand gun... though I may need a bigger nightstand. :)
