For reasons unknown to me, that was what the judge felt was appropriate.

She KNOWINGLY bought a firearm for a prohibited person. I don't get it...

So let me get this straight

We need a national, comprehensive background check and gun registry system to prevent straw purchases, which could give firearms to prohibited people who might do terrible things with them?

But, once the straw purchase is made and the prohibited person does terrible things...meh.

    Got it.

The rationale with regards to SB281 and Straw purchases last year by the legislature was:

"Making it harder to purchase guns across the board may have some limited prohibitive effect on straw purchases"

That while the same legislature struck down (by illegally changing votes) an amendment that would have stronger penalties for gun crimes.

    True colors shining through.

You know, if a person is a lookout or getaway car driver for a robbery where no firearms were supposed to be used, and the guy running the stickup inside the convenience store actually had a gun and pulled the trigger, the lookout or getaway car driver would be up for murder charges because of the felony murder rule. Even if they thought a gun wasn't supposed to be involved. In this case, the woman GOT THE BAD GUY THE GUN! Heck, if a lookout in my example above can be charged with murder, she should be charged with murder under the felony murder rule.

This is the problem with gun laws, if she didn't get it for him, he would have found another way. If he is that dangerous, he shold have been in jail or executed. Control the criminal and not the tool.

Straw purchases are extremely rare, especially in Maryland.

I recall a MDSP trooper testifying on duty about this. When asked how many he had investigated in his many years of service, he replied - none. He did say he had heard of maybe 3 cases ever.

Stick to going after criminals, not making it more difficult for law abiding citizens to legally obtain, carry and use them.

The true objective of these anti-Constitution politicians is to make it so difficult for good people to own guns, and to deamonize guns to the point society rejects the legitimate purpose of firearms; that someday we will be an unarmed society and easier to manipulate.

We are living in times where our very Liberty is under attack. Do nothing and it will surely be lost.

A dealer told me a story of how he had a person spend 10 minutes looking at and handling handguns, asking questions. The dealer recommended a model and the guy said he would be back. 1 minute later a girl walks in and points to the same gun and says she wants it.

The dealer knew it was a straw purchase attempt. He went in the back, called MSP and they said to get a vehicle tag number and they would follow up later. They would not be sending anyone out at that time.

What you guys are failing to see here is that the average criminals fall into the democrat base and envoking laws that are already on the books against criminals would hurt the people that vote for them. However; most gun owners are conseratives and punishing them is ok. Plus it will help when they decided they are ready to attemt total gun confiscation.

Problem is the level of regulation government wants in order to enforce "straw purchase" violations, along with the fact it is a classic example of blaming the tool. Mandatory background checks, registration, licensing, collection inspections, criminal charges if a theft isn't reported etc. They all come from the "widespread straw purchase" myth, with just a handful of examples and all present a number of risks to the hundred millions of gun owners who use their firearms lawfully. There are already laws about contributing to a criminal action, give a car to someone that you know will commit a crime with it, and you can be held liable, IMO that is sufficient for someone who supplies firearms for a crime,. It still blames the tool, and infers the punishment or likelihood of a conviction of the primary criminal charge(murder/robbery/assault etc) is insufficient, it's a symptom of a legal system that has left justice behind long ago, not justification to force citizens to surrender their 2A rights.
