The public in general has a short memory and is easily distracted.
Politicians on the other hand do not and are always looking for an event to exploit ,whether it be immediately or witheld for future use.

That goes for both sides of the aisle with no exceptions!

I expect federal level legislation to founder given the pressing and unavoidable economic issues that are upcoming.
The state on the other hand needs a good distraction from economic issues and a push on gun control would be that short term diversion.

After some future mass shooting you can be sure to hear calls of 'we told you so' or 'see, it didn't work' or 'we did not do enough'. The problem is those one liners work for either side of the argument and will be used by both sides.

We are in a land of politicians jockeying for power without regard to the people they serve regardless of political persuasion.

I see Martin O'Malley using revised Maryland gun control laws as a lever to garner northeastern support for his bid at national level office. He's just counting the days until the next big shooting. Tie that in with a slight economic improvement and good standing within his party and he'll be queing up for his chance.

I think this fact, sided with Goodlatte heading firearm regulations is starting to make it look more likely that Feinstein is S.O.L. .

“We’re going to take a look at what happened there and what can be done to help avoid it in the future, but gun control is not going to be something that I would support,” he said.

Goodlatte, who has an “A” rating from the National Rifle Association, has been elected by his conference to chair the House Judiciary Committee next year, where he will have jurisdiction over firearms regulations.

You're absolutely right! Everything he's done lately is scripted to bolster his chances for the presidency.
