For those of you who don't remember, I just got my first handgun last month.

Anyways, being new to gun ownership, I'm honestly amazed at the number and types of guns we are able to own in the state. I thought we were strictly a handgun state until I saw SCARs, AR-15's, AK's and shotguns in the gunshops.

So why is MD considered to have some of the strictest gun laws in the country? Is it because we can't carry? Or we make people wait 30 days in between handgun purchases?

I'm just looking for some enlightenment fellas. I've never lived or contemplated gun ownership in another state, so I have nothing to compare it to.

    So let 'er rip....

Seven-day cool off period, no open carry, conceal carry is near impossible for the common fella to obtain, magazine capacity, et cetera.

... handgun roster, transport laws, liberals who complain, etc.

Hell, I think most of the counties in California are shall issue or may issue (and not like MD's "may" issue).

All the previous stuff plus, and this is minor but still salt in the wound, having to pay roughly $20 for an AK mag that MD says is ok while I could get mil-spec mags for <$10 with 10 more rounds that Md says are dangerous. Ridiculous red tape laws like regulated long guns.

and the damn assault rifle list...you can buy a mini 14 with standard stock cash and carry with crime check, BUT if it has a collapsible stock, you have to wait seven days. You can however, purchase the mini 14 with standard stock cash and carry with a crime check and a separate ATI or equivalent folding stock at the same time and install it yourself :)

Ahh, forgot about that one. But didn't you know, if it has a collapsible or folding stock, it kills babies on its own? :sad20:

Maryland's gun laws aren't all that strict; they're mostly just annoying. With the exceptions of carry and assault pistols, the state doesn't really flat-out stop you from doing very much... they just make it a PITA to do.

The problem is that out-of-state sellers don't really understand the handgun roster, the mag cap limits, etc. and make things look worse than they are.

New Anti-gun legislation being introduced at EVERY session (see MSI postings).

And, MY favorite (or is that least favorite) of which ... being required to buy a MSP 'certified' handgun lock for every handgun I purchase, regardless that I bring my own 'certified' lock, or that I have a locking handgun transport case, and that I have a gun safe at home.

Unable to purchase normal capacity magazines. Gotta go across the river, or work a deal with friends/relatives in other states to get 30rd stuff (i.e. normal capacity mags).

What are the crazy transport laws specific to MD?

Oh and this place is much better then NJ or NY or CA to name some places I have spent extended portions of my life without the freedom to buy many of the guns I now own in MD...

The pistol lock, and the spent case and the MD State Police involvement make this place anti-gun. And the 7 day thing and the fact that most transfers at an FFL cost $50+, where in TX they cost $15 to $20 and I have even gotten several transfers for free for being a "repeat" customer. :)

    Not to split hairs ...

hey, don't think it's all liberals. I consider myself liberal to moderate, but I definetly believe the right to own a gun and protect your family/property.....

Your descripttion probably means that you're more libertarian than liberal in my book; especially when it comes to 2A ... or you're a 'old line liberal', before the term liberal was co-opted by the present day progressives and socialists.

If you NEVER utter the words "common sense gun laws" you'll be cool here on MDS.

Remember ... The RKBA shall NOT be infringed.

Just to clarify, the law has nothing to do with a "cooling off" period, but rather was a product of the times. Dated well before the Internet and to my knowledge before fax machines, it gave FFLs/MSP/USPS time to process and transfer paperwork.

With instant background checks available, there's no good reason for this law to be on the books.

Not to mention that "cooling off" periods make no sense once you already own a handgun.

That said, the MSP check covers more DBs than NICS does, so I'm not necessarily sure that getting rid of the MSP check will be so easy politically... probably best framed as a way to save the state some money. Ditto for the roster.

But in Maryland only police and military should be able to protect you and your family. Didn't you hear? ;)

You sound lots more libertarian than liberal to me...

Actually I am the same way as BlackBerreta. I tend to vote left-ish simply because I believe that there are large projects that must be left to an organized government--things too large for local government, and will never be done by the free market. The Highway system we enjoy presently is a good example. Also powerful government can act as a brake to the more negative aspects of capitalism. Breaking up monopolies, for instance. Don't forget that we had much more pure Capitalism around the time of the Oil, Cattle, and Railroad Barons, we we didn't like it! So some government regulation is a good thing. The trick is knowing when to stop.

I have no idea how gun rights has somehow become a "conservative" issue. History shows that Dictators, right and left alike, try to disarm free men. From what I read of the Constitution and Bill of Rights, the 2A shouldn't even be a topic.

Gun ownership certainly works from a sensible liberal's viewpoint. Just because a candidate (or voter) believes in large government programs like Social Security shouldn't automatically mean in the belief of a Nanny-state where the state assumes total control. Which, by the way, is something that both political parties keep showing signs of. :envy:

Libertarian ism as it exists today is a bit too radical for a lot of people's tastes, if for no other reason that we remember abuses like the Appalachian coal miners too well to just abandon government. I am from a former coal-region, fyi. Its all hunters and gun owners who vote Democat!

For someone like me who only wish I could buy more than one gun a month, several of the laws are "inconvenient".

    * I've never wanted a gun that wasn't available in MD
    * Getting high cap mags requires a visit to some close by states
    * Even the 7 day wait doesn't impact me in a material way since I'm usually saving for some months before purchasing anyway. (and I already own enough guns for self defense)

Don't get me wrong, those laws are stupid, ineffective on having any effect on crime and should be thrown out by any legislature with common sense. I don't mean to imply I'm not for working for their repeal.

However, the ones that I feel impact me personally are the complex and overly restrictive handgun transport laws and of course "may issue".
