RESOLVED: American Eagle Federal factory 9mm 115gr SQUIB
    LOT NOV 43X727

Took my M&P 9 to the range, fired 3 boxes of American Eagle 115gr through it. Near the end of my session, the slide only opens 1/2 way. I had to push the spent casing out of the way and it cleared the chamber. Couldn't work the slide at the range. Went home, oiled it like crazy and could get it to slide forward using the palm of my hand on the back of the slide. Upon pulling it back, it goes 1/2 way and then sticks there until I force it forward. Doesn't feel like anything is dragging or binding and the barrel is still free to move. It just stops solid 1/2 way back. Any suggestions before I call S&W?

can you see if the barrel is binding due to a bulge? If you're able to clear the chamber and light the barrel from the chamber end, you should be able to see the bulge from the inside as a dark ring halfway up. How about the recoil spring assembly? Definately in the correct way? Put the slide on a sturdy corner(not the barrel) up front and push it as far to the rear as you can with your support hand, then come forward hard with your shooting hand onto the backstrap. Be sure to grip the frame after the strike with your shooting hand so the gun doesn't fall. It could be a primer underneath or something like that. Also, slide the slide back as far as it'll go and take a picture of the underside of the slide at the rear(where the striker is), the front where the barrel protrudes, and inside the mag well, lit up with a flashlight at the underside of the slide with the slide closed. Pictures may show something obvious to those looking for the right things.

edit...i may be reversing what "1/2 way back" means. Is it locked to the rearward position and won't go forward into batteyr, or locked so that it won't open all the way? If the striker is binding on something as the slide's trying to return forward, it may just be as easy as removing the backplate and taking out the striker to allow the slide to come forward and off.

Wow, squib followed by a round. Good to know it did not KB. You are going to need to call the ammo manufacture too. Do you have the box still?

Yes, I have the original box. I'm not sure when the squib happened. I do remember a round going off earlier in the day where the slide did not come back enough to eject but the gun was dirty and I had a couple of misfeeds, too. I didn't notice anything strange. I probably put 50 rounds through it after that happened and had great groupings.

I have run over 2500 rounds through mine without cleaning and had no issues so I do not think dirty was an issue. From what you are describing, you had a squib, then due to outstanding marksmanship you were able to continue practice and get good results until the bulge got to the point of no return. That could have turned out a whole lot worse.

Go buy a lottery ticket, you got some luck going for you right now.

As it's been said before, if it doesn't sound, feel, or act right, check the weapon. Glad to hear it didn't blow up on you instead of just bulging the barrel.

wow, send that thing back to s&w to see if they'll just fix it for free. They should send you a shipping label, but you can bring it to basspro and pay $30 to have it shipped if you'd prefer to do that too. It should def go back though, so they can check the slide to see what damage occurred to any engagement surfaces in the lugs and front cutout bushing in the upper and lower locking block. Be sure to contact federal too, to see if they'll do anything.

I don't think ATK would do anything for ya other than refer you to federal, but their contact stuff is this

They should at least be interested in which lot of ammo that occurred and how many views this thread gets describing your problem with their failed ammunition(unless this is a s&w rep viewing the thread in which case it was clearly a malfunction from the gun ;) )

Haha, yeah, they barely eject the spent casing. :-)

Afterthought... Guess I'm not getting my Apex equipment out of there before I send it back.

They should send you your parts back or they may leave them in place. GLOCK will pull all after market parts out and send them back in the box.
