The differences are cosmetic, with the White Onyx having a cleaner more modern look....

I'm pretty sure both models were/are available in a variety of configurations (sporting or field, mobilchoke or optima, 26"-32" barrels).

The Onyx was Beretta's excellent entry-level O/U for many years. Mine came w/ a 26" barrel and a different stock/forend.

What a great reply with pictures. I've been on the market for a sporting 686 for quite some time but most places don't carry them in stock only via special order. Do you happen to know a good dealer in Maryland not to far from Baltimore - DC area ? The only place I know is PG trap and skeet , but whenever I'm there they seem very busy dealing with lines of people and only a few guns in the case.
I don't mind paying a bit extra for qualified help to make sure the gun fits me perfectly. I've shot rental 686 numerous times, but each one feels different.

Might want to try Bart's in Glen Burnie... but don't be surprised if they seem too busy to help you even if the store is empty.

I stopped in at Bart's to buy shot a couple hours ago. I was greeted and offered assistance and had half a dozen shotguns pulled out of the rack for me to handle. I am very familiar with the Gun Shop Guy attitude but I've never run into it at Bart's. They carry Beretta, Caesar Guerini & Blaser. I've had my share of 680's but if I was buying my first mid-range shotgun today I'd probably buy a CG Summit.

BTW, Millers in DE usually has a pretty good stock of Beretta O/U's at good prices, as does Shyda's in PA.

Can a Maryland resident buy a shotgun in another state ? ( E.G. VA, DE, PA) without an FFL transfer to a local dealer?
    Thanks

Yes, because the out of state dealer can run the federal NICS check without running afoul of the federal law requiring a gun sale to be compliant with the laws of both states.

Now, finding such a dealer willing to do business with someone from here is another story.

I had that issue at Cabela's in Hamburg PA. Treated me like dealing would land him in jail. Dipshits.

People vary and how much it is tolerated depends on the manager and culture. To be frank Cabelas in Hamburg has always been insanely courteous even when overun to me.
