It's legitimate concern to me because I had close encounters with lose dogs(80lbs plus) in the past.

What are the legal burdens should such a scenario occur for a maryland individual with a w&c?

    Any self-defense insurance cover this?

What are the appropriate procedures in the aftermath of shooting a dog?

I could see this going sideways in a hurry. I would say if you had injuries sustained by being attacked by the dog it might be considered ok and you would have a defense for your actions. But to shoot and kill the dog just because you felt like it might attack you would be legal suicide. You could loose everything in a law suit. Get some bear spray instead.

If the dog gets a hold of your leg, don't shoot yourself.

I would hate to have to shoot a dog and deal w/any ramifications of the shooting (I'm sure it can be justified because dogs certainly can maim and kill). I get your concern and reason for asking.

Have you considered carrying pepper spray for the purpose of protection against dogs? If you needed to use it-- might be way less hassle in the long run.

Assume you are being video taped. If you wouldn't mind the video being shown on the news, you're probably OK.

Became illegal in 2013. Only a LEO is lawfully aloud to shoot a dog attacking a person or livestock. FO, before that dogs attacking livestock got lead and then the Sheriff would try to find the owner. Now, you would wait while a breed of peace kills all your kids ducks or lambs.

    SSS is the rule now.

Well if you know there's a dangerous dog and made two threads about it, why dont you just stay away from it?
I would get what information need from my self defense carrier if you've obtained such instead of anyone here.
I'm sure they ll let you in on how that would work for you.

Reasonable Fear of death or gave injury is an appropriate situation.
I would first use the pistol as a club on its head or face.
This is a domestic dog… a coyote or such which is suspicious for rabies encephalomyelitis does not get to get that close.
Neither of these is a likely scenario. But nonzero. But really small.

Sometimes it's easier said that done. I've posted at length about my troubles with my neighbors aggressive dogs and Animal Control and the County's zero desire to do a damned thing about it.
