I have an H&R ultra slug hunter in 20 gauge and I replaced my old scope with a Redfield 3/9x40 and really like it on a slug gun. I rarely turn it up above 5x but the extra magnification is nice for sighting in.

I like the Nikon Pro Staff I have on one of my rifles. For a slug gun, I would stick with 3-9 magnification or lower, like 2-7 or 1.5-5. Unless you are mainly shooting agricultural fields, my guess is you will have many more opportunities where a lower magnification of 3x will be much more useful to you than a higher magnification.

Mine stays at 3x unless I need it. With very few exceptions, if I need the higher magnification, I have time to crank it up.
