So, it looks like I'm going to come into possession of an AN/PVS-4 equivalent. I've never owned any NV before, so I have no idea exactly how to use this thing without damaging it. Obviously, don't turn it on during daylight or in a well-lit room, but what's the safe amount of ambient light otherwise? Can it be used as soon as the sun goes down, or do I need to wait for it to get really dark? If I'm in my basement with the lights off, are LEDs from home theater equipment going to screw it up?

I mean, this is a military optic, I would expect it to be somewhat resistant to damage... but I figured it would be better to ask.

It has a cover with some pin holes in it so you can use it during the day (mostly to sight it in)

I have a pvs-7 which has a lens cap with a pinhole also, which allows daytime use for testing
