I was looking for a rifle bench rest. I typically shoot by using my arm resting on a pad like I was taught. I did a lot of looking at different models. Then being the cheap SOB (a frugal person), I decided to make one out of my multitude of scrap wood. I took it to the range, and it worked like I knew what I was doing. A couple of other guys tried it and really liked it. I made it adjustable with thumb screws with a thick leather rest for the rifle. It makes shooting easier and provides a good steady rest.

I like it - beats the cheap Caldwell sandbags I've got.
I made it for my big bore lever action rifles was surprised how well it worked. Did not move at all when shooting. I also put leather with the rough side out covering the bottom which keeps it from sliding or moving.

Looks a lot easier to pack around than this

You need more padding to keep the rifle from bouncing when shooting.
    More padding?.
Typically shoot for score, with free recoil
Rifle needs to be free on these slick bags so it recoil rearward each shot.
Even that 13 pound 52d winchester 22 un the pic recoil 1 1/2 inches rearward each shot

I am shooting a Henry 45/70 and 30/30 along with a Big Horn Armory .500 S&W model 89 carbine with max loads. Groups between 4-6" at 100 yards with iron sights. Yup free recoil.
