Have a Springfiled Model 67 Series D 12 gage pump riot gun.

It is of no particular value other than my Father bought it at a gun show 30 years ago.

It needs rebluing, there is light rust on the barrel. The wood stock could use some attention, but have extensive experience in refinishing wood, so this is easy for me.

Rebluing the metal is where I have no knowledge.

Any suggestions or things to avoid?

I would clean it and keep it original as possible, Have gunsmith check it for safe use. Good luck with your hand me down.

Wet the barrel down with WD-40.

Wet some 0000 steel wool with some WD-40. A polishing/buffing pad for fine woodwork will work too.

LIGHTLY rub the barrel with the steel wool/pad. Check occasionally to see if rust is coming off by wiping the area with a rag.

Keep the surfaces WET and work GENTLY.

You can use ANY light oil with 0000 steel wool to remove the rust.

For rebluing, you can either find someone who does hot bluing or use rust bluing.

Rust bluing is used on a lot of double barrel and O/U shotguns, as the hot bluing can be a problem with the soldered together barrels.

The cold blues are OK for a small touch up, but will not work for larger jobs.

Here is a source for rust bluing - http://www.pjsproducts.com/radocy.htm

Thanks for the info, was not aware of the rust bluing was an option.

My first task will be to do a complete tear down and inspect parts.

I have fired this shot gun many times, used it in a 3 day shotgun course. Was hitting steel targets out to 150 yards. Using this old thing I was about a tenth of a second behind a Banelli M-4 for putting 5 rounds on target from the 7 yard line. Not claiming to be a speed daemon, just my completion were hobby shooters.

My intent for this gun is to keep it around the house as a defensive gun but want it to look nice. For me, if it does not function, I do not have much need for it.
