I use action proving dummies to verify work performed at my bench. I have some snap caps too but they very rarely mimic actual cartridge dimensions for proving.

You can load dummies with holes drilled through them for learning how to load enbloc's, mags strippers or for single load drills etc.

    I drill mine too.

I drill three holes, more or less equally spaced around, so one should always be visible in the mag. I think I may color them red with a marker, just to be safe.

I use snap caps for dry fire and practice, but they all seem slightly undersized. When it comes to working on function issues, sometimes you need real brass with a real bullet at your OAL.

    Different things for different uses.

Snap caps for those few firearms that require them for dry firing.

Commercial dummy rounds for teaching and practicing.

Reloaded dummy rounds for function check and setting dies.

I know dummy round and snap cap are good for dry firing practice and all. However, my limited experience with the US Army showing that it doesn't use dummy round or snap cap for anything. Blanks are used with MILES system.

Do you really need dummy round or snap cap?

    It depends on the firearm.

Most modern centerfire firearms do not need them. But older ones (or modern made, but to old designs) may have issues.

Many modern rimfire firearms are fine with dry firing, but not all. You need to RTFM.
