What size patches do folks use on there BP guns?
I used some cleaning patches for shooting a .50cal TC Hawken and .50 CVA carbine. I started using cleaning patches for shooting, is this going to be an problem now or later?

I always use Hornandy .490 round balls and a patch from a unmarked bag. I ran out of the patches my brother I opened a new bag he had of CVA .015 patches. I can not ram it in far without way more effort than the old patches. So I used a cleaning patch with gun oil, it was pretty accurate. My brother cannot remember all the black powder stuff he gave me back then, so no idea what I had been using.

If you are using cleaning patches they usually feel like a white cotton Tshirt. Shooting patches are usually tougher, more like linen, and they either come pre-lubed or you add lube before loading.

They should be cotton/linen, not a poly blend or the poly may melt into the barrel.

Here is a link to .010" patches:
    http://www.midsouthshooterssupply.com/item.asp?sku=001065102 .

    Or some unlubed ones:

Here's what a good patch looks like after being fired.

Late to this but . . .In my .50 flintlock I use a .490 rb on top of a .015 pillow ticking patch. In my 20 ga (.60 cal) smoothbore flintlock I use a .600 rb on top of the same .015 pillow ticking patch. It goes in tight but smooth (no rifling). I do use a short starter on both.

Got to make my first post somewhere.
Might as well be in here.

This is what my 0.015 patch looks like after it has left the barrel of my percussion Ardesa Hawken Woodsman in cal .45.
I don't buy pre lubed patches, but lube them myself with a Nivea skin cream and Ballistol mixture.
    Results are great.

    Met vriendelijke groet,

Welcome to the community, Martin. Best regards to you also!

    Thanks onthefarm.
I noticed you already translated my signature, or do you speak Dutch????
We also have some things in common.
I just hope that I don't offend you when I say that I like my chicken best next to my potatoes and vegetables. :innocent0

I went on the web for the translation.

No worries about your feelings for chicken's, thought the ones I have are laying hens and almost pets. They follow my wife around because she likes to give them corn and fruit for treats. I find that watching them is relaxing after a day in the office, and I love the eggs.

What is the environment like in the Netherlands for shooters? Are you BP only?

Nivea skin cream and Ballistol? That's a combo, for sure. Glad it works well. I cannot imagine what it smells like!

    Welcome.

Thanks onthefarm, I feel a bit better now.
Mmmmm.....I don't have any chickens in my backyard, but I like watching the birds after a day hard work. :)

Compared to US gun law, Dutch gun law extremely strict.
The only organisations that are allowed to bear arms are the police and the military.
Dutch civilians are not allowed to buy guns for self protection.
We have to rely on the police for that.

We do however have the possibility to become what we call over here a "sport shooter".
First you have to become a member of a gun club.
After one year membership you can apply for your own weapon.
This has to be a cal .22 or a muzzle loader.
    It's not allowed to buy a semi-automatic .22.
After the second year you can buy bolt action rifles up to a cal of 8mm only.
    Semi-automatic weapons are not allowed.
Pistols and revolvers are limited up to 9mm and are not allowed to have a caliber of 6.35mm or less.
After the third year you can buy anything that is allowed by our Dutch gun law.
Total maximum amount of weapons that can be owned by a Dutch Sport shooter is 5.
Original BP weapons are free, meaning you can buy as many as you want.
    Replicas need a license.

This is Dutch gun law in a nut shell.
I left out lots of details that , in your eyes, make it all worse.

This sounds like almost nothing is possible, but that is not true.
Like I said.....compared to US gun law Dutch gun law is extremely strict.
Much is still possible though, but you have to be very patient.

    I don't shoot BP only.
I also own a Mosin Nagant M39, Mosin Nagant M91/30 PU sniper and a Dutch Steyr Mannlicher M95 in cal 6.5x53.5mmR.
I reload for all these rifles.
    I like to reload.
It gives my hobby an extra dimension.

    Met vriendelijke groet,

    Thanks Cordite.
That Nivea/Ballistol combo does work great.
I got this combo from a German BP shooter.
The only thing I had to find out myself was how much Nivea I had to mix with the Ballistol for use in my Hawken Woodsman and Le Page pistol.
In my case it's 90% Nivea and 10% Ballistol for both weapons.
How does it smell...........good enough to keep my mother in law out of my men room when I'm working there. :D
I just open the jar with the Nivea/Ballistol mixture and peace is there.

I knew it was strict, but....... OH. MY. GOD.

I hope you don't mind, but I am going to put this in the Gun rights, MD 2A to give my friends her a little perspective. In case you didn't know, we have been in a little dustup with our gvernment and are feeling a bit blue.

With the highest regards for your patience and persistance,

No problem at all Gary, but please keep in mind that what I wrote is just our gun law in a nutshell.
It gives you an impression of what we have to go through before we can own a gun.
I left out all the nasty details.

    Met vriendelijke groet,

    Martin
