i have a mossberg maverick 88 (first ever gun purchase) and have only taken shooting once in the 6 months i've had it.

i discovered a while back that freestate will let me shoot it with slugs so i brought it down in the garage with the intent to pack it up and take it to the range... that was almost two months ago.

i still haven't been able to schedule time to go but as i was inspecting the barrel last night i noticed some spots that look a little like rust spots.

"no problem" i thought, "i'll just rub some rust remover over it and it'll be good as new"

turns out it was rust and stain remover... i now have a "stainless" barrel

i'm not really unhappy with the way it looks but have i compromised my barrel?

i'm still new to guns, so i hope you all will forgive my ignorance :o

if it's still safe to shoot, i was thinking about matching the magazine tube... bad idea?

    thanks for any feedback!

Safe to shoot but you have no bluing on it to protect from rust. I would do what Inigoes said.

I made a similar mistake with my .22 back in the day. Just buy a home blueing kit. It isn't hard to make it look good, just take your time.

Its a fun and Artisitic Project. I had to attend a class on this (although I may not remember some key elements) but Most of it can be done by the average guy if you sit and read before spray and acting.

Now you have the Opportunity to paint it the way you want! Good luck

Brownells sells that Alumihyde II that works VERY well for this kind of thing.

+1 for Alumahyde its easy to work with but make sure you degreese the parts properly before applying. You may also need a respirator to protect your lungs.

Read the label on any product you decide to use.

That video makes it look easy. How much are those kits?

ETA: lauer custom weaponry...tried to look it up and I'm blocked at work

lauers website has the kits for $35 with a whole variety of colors but $14 minimum shipping

brownells has the kit for $30 in matte black only and $14 shipping
additional colors available but not part of a kit starting at $16

midway has more kit options from $35 but also looking for $15 shipping

apparently duracoat is a hazardous material not cheaply shipped!

i thought getting cerakote at bollingers would be way more expensive but it's looking like it will only be slightly more expensive for what i hear is the top shelf of firearms protection!
