Got a question for all you back room refinishers out there.

I picked up a frankenstein looking 870. It's a got a blued 870 Wingmaster receiver with a parkerized, rifle sight, cylinder bore barrel, and wood stocks. I really need to clean this piece of junk up, especially the rust in the blued portions.

What would you recommend for getting the rust off the blued parts? I was thinking steel wool but, I'm not sure what kind. I also could sand blast the whole thing.

    What do you think?

If it's a mismatch and a shooter with poor original finish and it's not a collector gun, I highly recommend refinishing it. If you have a compressor use very fine grit sandpaper to rough up the non-rusted finish (or carefully bead blast it) and remove ALL rust. Duracoat makes an attractive matte black or gun blue finish that will bring life back to that old pump. I turned a beater pawn shop 870 into this. This was my first duracoat attempt on a long gun.

That came out good but what's that "round thing" on the receiver??

It's the "Magpul" logo. All the cool kids have it :D

I'm just a poser though. I saw it in a video and thought it looked cool. When a fellow member sent me one with his lower payment I had to put it somewhere :D Then again, if you are talking about the "Before" pic, that's the magazine cap.

    I guess I'll stay uncool. ;)

as others have noted, steel wool will do it, but you've gotta be very careful not to erode the remaining finish. I've had good success with brass wool and eezox. YMMV

    Steel wool. Be careful.

Steel wool won't go deep enough to remove rust without further screwing up the finish, leaving you with a blotchy mess. I would bead blast the whole gun and refinish with duracoat or a similar product. Browse the Brownell's site.

I have used Brownells Alumahyde on several old beat up Remington 1100's with great results. I found that naval jelly worked best to remove all the rust and bluing. Then prep the metal per the Alumahyde directions. Left a nice dark semi-gloss finish. Remember that chemical rust removers will destroy the bluing!

Will bead blasting the parkerized barrel take the parkerization off? If I am going to refinish the receiver, I might as well do it all.

The hell with it. Put the frankenthing back together and shoot it as is.

It's a shotgun. It's like a hooker. It's supposed to work hard, not be pretty.
