Old knife handle repair

I have a knife my FIL made, his initials “RL” are stamped on the blade. He passed about 10 years ago, from what I remember it was made in the 50’s timeframe. Asking if the rivets can be replaced or would it crack the handle if new ones were inserted? Found it in some old stuff, just sharpened it on my stone and holds a nice edge.

You can buy knife kits with brass rivet rods , get a 2K epoxy if you are cleaning up and re-using same scales .

If it was me i would use the same scales new brass rods & epoxy and clamp it real good

Me, I'd keep it just the way it is as a keepsake. I'd put a fine edge on it, dress one deer with it, and put it away or into a display. I would never "fix" it. My 2 cents. You want a better knife, there are millions on the market. That one is a one of a kind.

I could look at it this way, but then again if I were going to fix it, I would remove the scales, reinforce them with some epoxy and remount them with new rivets, and pass it on with the original makers character.
