    Make sure it hasn't been rechambered (perhaps to 8mm-06 Wildcat) before attempting to fire it. Pay a gunsmith if need be.

    It may be an early one as the "S" leads to suspicion; If the barrel was made pre 1905, it has the .318 bore. The "S" is supposed to denote that the bore was opened up to .323 for the more modern ammo (at that time, 1905) but in a fair amount of instances only the throat was opened and not the entire bore.
