Has anybody any experience with cutting down, squaring and crowning a black powder barrel? I have one that was apparently cut down but was cut on a bias (which is why I got it for cheap!). I'd like to get it squared away ( pun intended) as it is a Getz barrel and I don't want it to go to waste. I want to use it. It's a Getz barrel, 1 inch across the flats, .50 caliber.

    Thankee.

I'm fascinated as to why anyone would even cut down a M/L barrel. HUH ?

The correct answer is to call Pacific Tool and Gauge in Oregon. 1-541-826-5808

You can get it squared up using a disk sander then dress the 8 edges with a file and emory paper.

Then order a bore chamfering tool and a bushing in your caliber.

A little cutting oil and a few turns of the tool and your golden again.

    Good luck.

Gangbangers who want to carry concealed.

As a matter of fact, as soon as Gabby and the Space Cadet find out about this, it'll be the next thing banned.

They'll institute a ban on large capacity flash pans.

No more frizens because they usually "spark" an outrage from the left.

Black flints will be banned as well because everyone knows black flints are more dangerous.

Yeah I hear you. I have people ask me why I own so many muzzleloaders... the answer is "currently" very simple.

I can imagine a gun fight in the streets of SE D.C. with muzzleloaders... That would make the FOX 5 10 o'clock really interesting and worth actually watching...

why it always gotta be a black / flint issue ?

So you're saying this world is getting so silly the word blackpowder is no good either ?

I wonder if that's why some companies have just simply started calling it "substitute" ?

There may be any number of reasons to cut one down, I guess, but I found this at a yard sale in PA. It looks like it was already cut down but was done unevenly. It's a good barrel and when I "fix" it will still be 36" long. Got it for $3.00 and, like I said, it's a Getz barrel. Then I'm going to stock it on a nice piece of curly maple I have, add some furniture and a Chambers lock and see if I can't make me a muzzleloader. Already has a breechplug installed and the tang looks like it's a transitional piece, like Christians Spring or maybe an Edward Marshall.

    Thanks for the info.

I can stick it in the lathe and square it up and crown it for you. no charge if you send it or bring it by the house.

Epps, do you crown on the lathe or do you face it off and then use a tool?

Well, thanks very much Epps. But I am going to try this myself - call it a learning experience. I'd like to build a flintlock myself, could be the start of a good hobby.

I've done several, all cases where I wanted the barrel shorter for better balance, cutting off a couple inches. It's not as technical as you'd think, at least not for muzzleloaders. I hacksaw off the end, square it up with files, sandpaper blocks and a square, then if I want to be able to thumb start a ball on that barrel I'll cone it with a grinding stone in a hand drill. Go slow and keep things even, I've never had any accuracy problems. The old masters didn't have lathes or mills, just hand tools, you don't need any more than that.

It's coming along well; only working it part-time. It's all squared off and I am going to use the bore chamfering tool as soon as it gets here. Good thing is that I went to the local high school and spoke to a shop teacher. He let me use their disk sander and set me up really well.

This is kind of fun. Must admit it was a tad strange to cut off the barrel. Felt kind of guilty, like I had committed a sin or something.
