I don't think this is good, my scope is touching the free floated handguard.

Vortex viper 44mm on a set of Vortex medium rings (bought it as a combo)

I had my scope mounted and touched the rail. Shot way low I was thinkin WTF. Got home saw the problem and moved the scope forward a bit. Next range trip bingo worked great.

Get an American Defense or Burris one piece AR mount

Absolutely agree, I have the Burris on my other ar works fine but since the ring came with the scope, I want to use them instead of spending extra money on buying an extra set and having the hassle to sell existing rings.

If I am getting a set of high rings as an exchange, will that be ok without the riser? Save cost and less hassle?

You should mock things up and see where your eye falls in relation to the scope. The YHM risers are 1/2 inch and may work with your mounts. They aren't terribly expensive either.

AR scopes sit pretty damned high due to the stock/cheek weld. Normal rifles/scopes are set about 1.5 inches above centerline. AR's require about 2 inches above centerline.

Nikon, DNZ, and other companies make the mounts that will set the scope to the correct height without any guesswork.

    Good luck with it.
