I'm interested in buying a Mosin Nagant. I have been doing some reading on what to look for before making a purchase. I'm looking for suggestions where to go to get my hands on one and actually buy one. Is there a shop locally I can go to and inspect a Mosin? I've seen websites that offer them and I'm leery of buying one unseen unless someone can give a good recommendation. Thanks for any help.

If you are willing to drive for about an hour, Big Dog Outfitters in King George, VA has several in stock. They are factory re-arsenals with matching numbers (including matching bayonets!). If you decide to make the trip, and I can get away while you are there, I'll help you figure out what's what.

NB, once you buy one, if you shoot the milsurp ammo, remember you need to clean the rifle correctly to get the corrosive salts out of the gun and you need to do it in a timely manner. Same day at least.

Clandestine posted an excellent outline on what to do and what to use here. Its probably the best guide Ive seen.

I'd imagine there will be a decent selection of them at the gunshow in Frederick this weekend. There may be some members here willing to part with one as well. If you're just looking for one to shoot for fun, I'd recommend taking a look at Mosin carbines(M38, M44, T53) as well. They are a blast to shoot and make big fireballs.

That's a very generous offer to help. I may be able to head to big dogs this weekend.

Let me know if it looks like you'll be headed that way. They've got at least a dozen (probably more) out on the rack, and a case, or two, tucked away. Chances are good that I can meet you there this weekend. They've got some hex models on the rack, and lots of nice-looking re-arsenals.

I will let you know by Thursday. I am mainly looking to pick one up to shoot for fun and maybe some hunting with it.

Drive to Big Dog. Otherwise buy online from Classic Firearms and select any hand-picked options. I've bought a bunch from Classic and have not been disappointed.
