Dear Senator Montgomery,
I completely oppose the proposed bill - SB0281 - Firearm Safety Act of 2013. I would like to understand how anything in this bill will actually protect the citizens of this state. Please cite one fact either at the state level or Federal level that show gun restrictions will reduce gun related crimes?
What we do know is the following:
a) In Virginia between 2006-2011 gun sales went up by 73% and at the same time gun-related violent crimes fell 24%.
b) Since the outset of the Florida right-to-carry law, the Florida murder rate has averaged 36% lower than it was before the law took effect, while the U.S. murder rate has averaged 15% lower
c) Since the outset of the Texas right-to-carry law, the Texas murder rate has averaged 30% lower than it was before the law took effect, while the U.S. murder rate has averaged 28% lower
I can continue to cite facts that show more guns does not equal more crime. As a matter of fact let’s look at states/cities where gun controls were put in place:
a) During the years in which the D.C. handgun ban and trigger lock law was in effect, the Washington, D.C. murder rate averaged 73% higher than it was at the outset of the law, while the U.S. murder rate averaged 11% lower
b) Since the outset of the Chicago handgun ban, the percentage of Chicago murders committed with handguns has averaged about 40% higher than it was before the law took effect
I will ask again, please show me some facts, any facts that support such extreme legislation.
All I see this bill doing is creating 2.5 million criminals in the State of Maryland, that up until this point have been nothing but law abiding citizens.
Please do not infringe upon me and my fellow citizens’ 2nd Amendment rights.
Thank you for your time and hopefully your support of the US Constitution.

Hi Jason,
I appreciate your concern over gun control. The events in Newtown, Connecticut were horrifying. Killing children can wake up a nation to address a major issue. Maryland should not be exempt from this wake up call in this upcoming session.
I have myself added as a co-sponsor to Governor’s Firearm Safety Act of 2013. I believe that a holistic approach to gun control is the best way to combat this issue.
It should not be easier to buy a car than it is to buy a firearm.
Sincerely,
Karen S. Montgomery

She must be smoking crack.....how in the hell is it easier to buy a gun in Maryland than to buy a car? I walk into dealer or person selling car, drop down cash, take car home.
Buy a gun, go to FFL, complete upteen pages of paper work, wait 7-30 days, get approved, go back retrieve said gun, get to put it in my safe because I can't carry it anywhere.
